The Challenge Tournament champions will face the No. 1 athlete in their division in a best-of-three series on Sunday, with the winner earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. 2000 Olympic gold medalist and 2001 World Champion Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) has advanced to Championship Series at 120 kg/286 lbs. in Greco-Roman. Gardner defeated Paul Devlin (Cascade, Colo./U.S. Army), 5-0 in Saturdays' finals. Gardner will face 2004 U.S. Nationals champion Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) in a best of three series on Sunday for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. Byers was a 2002 World Champion, and defeated Gardner in the U.S. Nationals finals, 3-1 in Las Vegas in April. 2000 Olympic silver medallist Sammie Henson (Highland Mills, N.Y./Sunkist Kids) scored a miraculous last-second comeback to win the Challenge Tournament at 55 kg/121 lbs. in men's freestyle. Henson trailed Teague Moore (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC), 3-0 with less than 20 seconds to go, but Henson scored a takedown, two turns and an additional exposure point as time ran out for six quick points and 6-3 win. Henson will battle 2004 U.S.Nationals champion Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids) in a best of three series on Sunday for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. It will be a rematch of the U.S. Nationals finals, won by Abas. 1996 Olympic silver medallist Dennis Hall scored a victory at 55 kg/121 lbs. in Greco-Roman, and will face another 1996 Olympic silver medalist in Brandon Paulson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Minnesota Storm) in the Championship Series. Hall stopped 2002 U.S. Nationals runner-up Lindsey Durlacher, (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), 3-1, in overtime for the victory. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Hall won his medal at 57 kg/125.5 lbs., while Paulson was a medallist at 52 kg/114.5 lbs. The weight classes have changed since those Games. Hall decided to drop to 55 kg/121 lbs. this year, the lightest he has weight since he was a teenager. He and Paulson are friends and past workout partners. 2000 Olympic bronze medallist Garrett Lowney (Kaukauna, Wis./Minnesota Storm) captured the 96 kg/211.5 lbs. division in Greco-Roman, beating Dan Hicks (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Marine Corps), 3-1 in overtime. Lowney has earned the chance to meet 2004 U.S.Nationals champion Justin Ruiz (Salt Lake City, Utah/New York AC) in a best of three series on Sunday. Ruiz scored a last second takedown on Lowney in the U.S. Nationals finals to earn the victory there. Another member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team in Greco-Roman, Kevin Bracken, Colorado Springs, Colo. (New York AC), won the Challenge Tournament at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., beating Glenn Garrison (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), 6-0. Bracken to face 2004 U.S. Nationals runner-up Oscar Wood (Fountain, Colo./U.S. Army) in a best of three series on Sunday. Wood received the top seed in this tournament when U.S. Nationals champion Faruk Sahin accepted a provisional suspension from U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for a positive drug test. In the women's division, two-time World Champion Kristie Marano (Colorado Springs, Colo. (New York AC) captured the Challenge Tournament at 72 kg/158.5 lbs., with a pin over Stephany Lee (Honolulu, Hawaii/Missouri Valley), in 3:34. Marano will face 2004 U.S.Nationals champion and two-time World silver medallist Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/New York AC) in a best of three series on Sunday. Marano was the 2004 U.S. Nationals champion at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., but missed weight on Thursday night at that division, and had to move up to this division. Marano has won seven career World medals, and four of her World silver medals came at the highest division, but she has not wrestled at this weight for a number of years. In men's freestyle at 84 kg/185 lbs., 2003 World silver medallist Cael Sanderson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) won his Challenge Tournament by defeating Muhammed Lawal (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC), 7-2. Sanderson earned a rematch with 2004 U.S. Nationals champion Lee Fullhart (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) in a best of three series on Sunday. Fullhart upset Sanderson in the U.S. Nationals finals, after Sanderson had won the three previous U.S. Nationals titles. A summary of the other finals follows. MEN'S FREESTYLE At 60 kg/132 lbs., Mike Zadick (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) scored a 2-1 overtime referee's decision over Danny Felix, Charlottesville, Va. (Sunkist Kids). Zadick will face 2004 U.S.Nationals champion Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) in a best of three series on Sunday, a rematch of the U.S. Nationals finals won by Guerrero At 66 kg/145.5 lbs., the surprise winner of the Challenge Tournament was Jared Lawrence (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm), who edged Eric Larkin (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids), 4-3, in overtime at 7:34. Lawrence will face 2004 U.S.Nationals champion Jamill Kelly (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) in the best of three series on Sunday. At 74 kg/163 lbs., Joe Heskett (Grover Beach, Calif./Gator WC) scored a pin over Ramico Blackmon (Colorado Springs, Colo. (Team Excel), in 1:34 in the Challenge Tournament finals. Heskett will face 2004 U.S. Nationals champion Joe Williams (Iowa City, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) in a best of three series on Sunday, a rematch of the national finals won by Williams. At 96 kg/211.5 lbs., the Challenge Tournament Championship went to 2002 World Team member Tim Hartung, (St. Paul, Minn./Minnesota Storm) who won a 2-2 referee's decision over Tommy Rowlands (Columbus, Ohio/Dave Schultz WC). Hartung will face 2004 U.S. Nationals champion Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) in a best of three series on Sunday. MEN'S GRECO-ROMAN At 60 kg/132 lbs., the Challenge Tournament went to Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), who beat Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), 3-0. Warren avenged a loss to Nieradka from the U.S. Nationals finals. Warren will face 2004 U.S. Nationals champion and 2000 Olympian Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in a best of three series on Sunday . At 84 kg/185 lbs., Jake Clark (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Marine Corps) stopped Aaron Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force), 3-0 in overtime. Clark will face 2004 U.S. Nationals champion Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./ New York AC) in a best of three series on Sunday , a rematch of the national finals won by Vering. WOMEN'S FREESTYLE For the first time, women's wrestling will be contested in the Olympic Games, with four weight classes up for grabs. At 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Clarissa Chun (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) beat Sara Fulp-Allen (El Granada, Calif./Menlo College) 5-3 in overtime. Chun will face 2004 U.S. Nationals champion Patricia Miranda (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) in a best of three series on Sunday. Miranda is a two-time World silver medallist, and beat Chun in the U.S. Nationals finals. At 55 kg/121 lbs., the Challenge Tournament went to Tela O'Donnell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC), who beat 2003 World bronze medallist Jenny Wong (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), 5-2. O'Donnell will face 2004 U.S.Nationals champion and two-time World silver medallist Tina George (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) in a best of three series on Sunday. George beat O'Donnell in the national finals this year. At 63 kg/138.75 lbs., the Challenge Tournament went to Alaina Berube (Escanaba, Mich./New York AC), who beat high school sensation Stefanie Shaw (Waterford, Conn./New England Elite), 5-4. Berube will face 2004 U.S. Nationals runner-up Sara McMann (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in a best of three series on Sunday . McMann moved up to the top seed when Marano missed weight. McMann is a 2003 World silver medalist. There is one weight class that the U.S. has not qualified to compete in the Olympic Games, 74 kg/163 lbs.
