MEN'S FREESTYLE Matt Azevedo - 55 kg - San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Sunkist Kids On wrestling Mike Mena: "Every match has been a close match. I was able to get a good lock and clinch and had the momentum. I got a couple turns and broke the match open. It's very hard to score on him. Scoring seven points on him is pretty huge." "[When we wrestled] in February, it came down to the clinch, so I thought it was a good possibility we would be in the clinch and it would come down to that." On gaining experience that Mena has: "He's been doing this for a few years. The more you wrestle you develop poise, and I feel I'm doing that." Tim Dernlan - 55 kg - State College, Pa. - Dave Schultz Wrestling Club On wrestling in Indiana (Purdue graduate): "It's fun to be back home in Indiana. My family drove over from Ohio and my friends came down from Purdue. It's good to have the support here." Sammie Henson - 55 kg - Highland Mills, N.Y. - Sunkist Kids On his quick match with Albarracin: "I just wanted to get it over with as fast as I could. It's a long tournament, and the faster I can get through my matches, the better." On his comeback: "I have made like three comebacks. The last one I didn't think it was for the right reasons. I'm here because I want to win, I want to have fun and I want go out my way." Jeremy Hunter - 55 kg - Champaign, Ill. - New York Athletic Club On his win over Tim Dernlan: "I made him wrestle my match. Once I took him down and got that big turn, I was up 3-0, and that put me in the driver's seat." Mike Mena - 55 kg - Bloomington, Ind. - New York Athletic Club On his loss to Matt Azevedo: "It didn't work out this time I guess." On Azevedo's last score: "It was a good move on his part. I was trying to push him out, he felt the pressure and hit a good move." Danny Felix - 60 kg - Charlottesville, Va. - Sunkist Kids On his match with Nate Gallick: "I got off to a slow start and didn't pull the trigger like I usually do. I'm a little disappointed with myself." Ryan Lewis - 60 kg - Minneapolis, Minn. - Minnesota Storm On the meet: "I'm an underdog and not expected to win. I'll do everything I can and see how far it gets me. There's no pressure on me." Scott Schatzman - 60 kg - Chesterfield, Mo. - Wildcat Wrestling Club On his experience preparing for trials and graduating from law school in the same week: "All I wanted to do was come here, have a smile on my face and do the best I can. It's probably going to take awhile to process, but I'm not ending it here." Mike Zadick - 60 kg - Iowa City, Iowa - Hawkeye Wrestling Club On his last-second win: "It can't be left up to a judgement call like that. I am (scrambling) a lot, just in the room running it. The higher ankle usually wins in the scramble position." Jared Frayer - 66 Kg - Cambridge, Mass. - Dave Schultz Wrestling Club On his next bout against Eric Larkin, Sunkist Kids: "If I wrestle like I have in the past, I've been successful before. I need to move, work hard to get a 'W'. Today I wanted to work harder but it was a good first bout. I feel good. I need to keep wrestling. Tomorrow is another day. I need to be on my 'A' game tomorrow." Jared Lawrence - 66 kg - Minneapolis, Minn. - Minnesota Storm On facing Doug Schwab also of the Storm: "It's tough; I win, I feel bad; I lose, I feel bad. I'm in a lose-lose situation. We're friends but when it comes down to battle, he's the competitor. When we wrestle, it's always a close match. We have to scrap for every point. It's just about who is the better wrestler that day." Muhammed Lawal - 84 kg - Stillwater, Okla. - Gator Wrestling Club On his energy level: "I'll feel better tomorrow. I didn't wrestle well at all. There are some things I need to improve on before tomorrow. It's my tournament to win." Cael Sanderson - 84 kg - Ames, Iowa - Sunkist Kids On his first bout: "It was a good warm up. A good first match." On continuing in the Trials: "Stay focused, of course, that's the goal. Have fun and wrestle hard." "You've got to wrestle real well if you want to win." On the difference between college folkstyle wrestling and Olympic freestyle wrestling: "The difference is its technical, different moves. I'm still trying to figure that out." Melvin Douglas - 96 kg - Mesa, Ariz. - Sunkist Kids On wrestling as a sport: "For all the hard work you put in it, you don't get the credit. Wrestling is one of the hardest sports, if not the hardest. The only sport more hard is swimming and I can't float." On his comeback: "I did it because somebody told me I couldn't do it. I don't have anything to lose. I have a saying: 99% of the game is mental and the other 1% is just getting out of bed." Tim Hartung - 96 kg - St. Paul, Minn. - Minnesota Storm On his first match: "You like to get the first match under your belt. You never know how your body's going to feel. It helps you settle down and open up a little bit." On his training: "I feel like I had a great training session between Nationals and here. I got to get back to my old style, put the pressure on and go, go, go." Tommy Rowlands - 96 kg - Columbus, Ohio - Dave Schultz Wrestling Club On his win over Damion Hahn, Minnesota Storm: "He's a tough guy. I'm just happy to come away with a win." "He'll never give up when he wrestles until the whistle blows." On the crowd: "I feel like I have the best people here cheering me on." Jon Trenge - 96 kg - Orefield, Pa. - New York Athletic Club On the clinch: "I was just thinking 'don't let my hands go.' Dean went for his two best moves. He's really tall, so he gets them a lot. I don't think he realized I was going to try to push him out of bounds." Steve Mocco - 120 kg - North Bergen, N.J. - New York Athletic Club On the meet: "I'm just here to wrestle. It's exciting. It's the biggest meet I've ever wrestled in. I feel well prepared." On his match: "I didn't attack enough. We both wrestled on our feet and were a little shy with each other." MEN'S GRECO-ROMAN Dennis Hall - 55 kg - Plover, Wis. - Sunkist Kids On his head injury he sustained during the match: "I think he bit my head. He didn't do it on purpose, but weird stuff happens in matches. I thought it exploded, but it looks like it's OK." On training: "It's different now. I have two kids and its harder to do the things I need to do." On the match with Joe Betterman: "I just wanted to control the tempo. I should have finished him off, but it feels good to get a full match out of the way. I have the matches under my belt, now I just need to sharpen my tools." Mark Rial - 66 kg - Colorado Springs, Colo. - Gator Wrestling Club On his match technique: "I tried to stay solid on bottom and kept him from lifting me. I knew if I did that, I would win." On T.C. Dantzler's weight cut: "I could tell in certain scrambling situations that he didn't have the power he needed to get on top." On the win: "It's a big win, but there are tougher matches ahead." Garrett Lowney - 96 kg - Freedom, Wis. - Minnesota Storm On wrestling R.C.: "I've known R.C. for a few years and done live training with him, so I knew it would be a tough match. We know each other so well and know what each other will do. It just cam
