2004 Olympic Team Trials-Wrestling Press Conference featuring top U.S. Wrestlers in preparation for Olympic Team Trials in Indianapolis, Ind. May 21-23. Wrestlers Men's freestyle Kerry McCoy (Bethleham, Pa./ New York AC) Men's Greco-Roman Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Sunkist Kids) Women's freestyle Patricia Miranda (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Dave Schultz WC) 2004 Olympic Coaches Men's freestyle Kevin Jackson Men's Greco-Roman Andy Seras Women's freestyle Terry Steiner Questions from the press Q for Jackson about the intensity of the athletes at the 2004 U.S. Nationals Jackson: "I disagree with what Coach Gable said. I thought the guys wrestled hard and thought the best guy at the Nationals tournament won, and wrestled better than their opponent did. That wasn't the event that is going to set the team though. We should see all out competition and intensity at this event. We should see the guys who are going to medal in Athens perform as they should here. So when the tournament is over we can say the guy is going to win a medal if he wrestles the way he did here. Coach Gable has been around longer than I have and his perspective may be a bit different than mine. But I think we will have a good showing in Athens." Q for Steiner about women in non-Olympic weight classes moving up or down to compete at Trials. Steiner: "Depended on the individual. I have seen both cases of women moving both up and down. Specific cases include of women moving down include Lauren Lamb, Erin Tomeo, and Katie Kunimoto. It all depends on the individual and how her body feels in the decision to move up or down." Q for Jackson about Cael Sanderson losing at U.S. Nationals. Jackson: "I wouldn't say it is a rare loss. Cael was undefeated in college, but not on the Senior level circuit. He handled the loss well. I think it made him more motivated, and actually he seemed better to me the last time I saw training out in Colorado Springs than in the last two years. He seemed more motivated, trained harder, a little more focused and energetic. I am expecting him to wrestle real well. I think the loss motivated him and in the end I think it might be a good thing. It is never a good thing not to be a National champion and not sit on top of the ladder, and wrestle in the mini-tournament where guys beat each other up and guys can be hurt or exhausted after. For Cael it might have been a good thing, it might have identified some areas where he had problems in and might have to improve on. So he went home to improve on those areas and continue to work on them. I think in the end we will have a real good final if he makes it there." Q for Gruenwald about how his shoulder feels and who he thinks he will meet in the Championship Series. Gruenwald: "My shoulder is still not 100%. I would say give it another year and it will be back to where it is. This is about as serious of a shoulder injury as you can get with out the shoulder being torn off. I was happy to be back on the mat at Nationals. It wasn't 100% then and it isn't now. As for who I am going to meet, it will probably be Joe Warren or Glenn Nieradka. Joe is a younger guy who has a lot of fire, where is Nieradka is older workhorse. As for my shoulder, it feels stronger than it was at Nationals and God willing if I win this tournament, it will be better when the Olympics roll around." Q for McCoy about how he will prepare during the Challenge Tournament. McCoy: "I will enjoy it (the time off) a bit more than wrestling in the challenge tournament. I am going to watch it if I feel like it, but if I don't I will go back to my room relax and watch a movie. The frontrunner to come out of the Challenge Tournament is always the National runner-up. This year the second and third guys at Nationals may have to wrestle again. You never know who will come out, so I am expected to go out there and wrestle my best no matter who comes out. Q for McCoy about any benefits for the winner of the Challenge tournament to be wrestling for two days. McCoy: "Benefits will be on an individual basis. After three or four matches you could be fired up, but you could also be hurt." Q for Miranda about how excited she is to have her sport recognized at this level and to have an opportunity to represent your country. Miranda: "It is hard to describe how excited I am in a couple of words. A lot of it has been being in the right place, at the right time. I think our sport is recognized and that we are accepted to compete in the 2004 Games in Athens, but a lot more will be done in Athens to get the sport more widely recognized especially this year domestically. We will come home with some heroes, and Americans love heroes." Q for Seras about Brandon Paulson Seras: "I met Brandon when he was 15. I razzed him a bit and I thought he was going to run away and hide, but he was right in there asking me for more. He is a tough guy, who in my opinion really thrives when everything is against him. He finds a way to get through it. He is arrogant in his wrestling skills. He knows he is good and knows he can beat you." Q for Miranda about delaying law school to do something more with wrestling and dad's reaction to this. Steiner: " We go through this on a daily basis." Miranda: "The first part is under negotiation apparently. The honest answer is I am going to know when I step off the mat in Athens whether my competitive career is over, but for right now in these months leading up to it, it is very motivating to know I have got one shot. Everything I got will be spent training for this one shot in Athens. Until then, I am not doing a whole lot of thinking about it, but there are some conceivable situations. If not competitively, my payback to the sport of wrestling is going last my entire lifetime. Either in the background doing pro-bono work, or as a coach, or something, I do believe I will be involved in wrestling for the rest of my life. My dad's reaction when I started training for the 2004 Games was very scared because it was the first time my academics interfered with my athletics when I have always been able to do both at the same time. He wasn't very happy when I chose athletics. He is going to be here this weekend and if you mention to him the possibility of me going through 2008, he will probably have a heart attack." Q for Seras about a lot of points in Greco-Roman being scored in par terre, and in preparation for the Olympics if going to focus as a team on anything or strictly individual stuff. Seras: "I guess it is a two-part answer. We have team themes for every camp, for every preparation we can always count on par terre defense. My logic on that is that it is the only place on the match where you can lose and can't win. Depending on how we look here, and going over that with Shon Lewis and Steve Fraser, we will go over our team goals. Everyone knows their weaknesses so individual coaches will breakdown each guy." Q for McCoy about how it felt after the 2000 games and what has been your motivation throughout the last four years. McCoy: "After the 2000 Olympic games I was very disappointed. One because I didn't achieve my goal and two because I walked away from the sport. The 2001 World Championships were supposed to be in New York but due to September 11th, they were postponed. When they were postponed it was really in question whether I would continue to compete. When they got moved to Turkey, I didn't have the performance I wanted to mainly because my heart wasn't in it. My training was off and I decided to step a way from it. For the first time I really felt like I was done and really started to miss it. I took it one year at a time. My motivation was the goal I set forth of winning that I haven't won an Olympic gold medal, and that has been my goal." Q for Seras about Rulon wrestling in the Challenge Tournament. Seras: "Rulon is dealing with the same things he has been dealing with for the past 3 and ½ years since he won the Gold in Sydney. Everyone is gunning for him and everyone wants to be the guy to knock off the great American hero. The othe
