Sports Commissioner Podziba and Setrak Agonian, President of the Metropolitan Wrestling Association, Announce Honorees for the Annual Metropolitan Wrestling Awards Dinner 2003 World Women's Freestyle Champion Kristie Marano, World Men's Freestyle Silver Medalist Kerry McCoy and Jay Kriegel, Executive Director of NYC2012 to be Honored New York City Sports Commissioner Kenneth J. Podziba and Setrak Agonian, President of the Metropolitan Wrestling Association, today announced that the Metropolitan Wrestling Association's Annual Dinner on May 26th will be held at the New York Athletic Club. This year, the Metropolitan Wrestling Association's Annual Dinner will honor three individuals--2003 World Women's Freestyle Champion Kristie Marano, 2003 World Men's Freestyle Championships Silver Medalist Kerry McCoy, and Jay Kriegel, Executive Director of NYC2012. "After hosting one of the finest World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling ever, we are proud to honor Kristie Marano and Kerry McCoy for their exemplary performances at these championships and for all they have done for the sport of wrestling," said Commissioner Podziba. "I would also like to extend my warmest gratitude to Jay Kriegel for his leadership in making the championships a globally recognized success." Setrak Agonian, president of the MWA stated, "The Metropolitan Wrestling Association is thrilled to recognize these three individuals' contributions to the 2003 World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling and the sport of wrestling. The 2003 World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling would not have been the enormous success that it was without the tireless efforts of Jay Kriegel, and athletic achievements of wrestlers such as Kristie Marano and Kerry McCoy." Kristie Marano, aside from being the 2003 World Freestyle Champion, is ranked second on Team USA in her weight class (63 kg/138.75 lbs). She was born and raised in Albany, NY and now resides in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Some of her other accomplishments include 1998-2000, 2002 University Nationals Champion and 1996-99, 2002 U.S. Nationals Champion. Ms. Marano was also a nationally ranked judo athlete, finishing third in the 1995 Junior World Judo Championships. Kerry McCoy, the second place finisher at the 2003 World Championships, was the 2000-03 U.S. National Champion and 2000 Olympic Team Trials Champion. Mr. McCoy, who graduated from Penn State with a degree in marketing, was instrumental in leading his wrestling team to NCAA Championships in 1994 and 1997. Jay Kriegel, Executive Director of NYC2012, is being honored for his outstanding work for organizing the World Wrestling Championships to New York City. In addition to his responsibilities with these championships and the Olympic bid, Mr. Kriegel serves as Counselor to the Abernathy MacGregor Group, a leading financial communications firm. Prior to joining NYC2012 in 1999, Mr. Kriegel served as Senior Vice President of CBS Inc. He is a graduate of Amherst College and Harvard Law School. The New York City Sports Commission ensures the continuation and growth of a healthy environment for professional, amateur and scholastic sports activities in New York City.
