Kerry McCoy is the only 2000 freestyle Olympian that is in the driver's seat this year. He defeated Steve Mocco in one of the most highly-anticipated matchups of the U.S. Nationals. Now, the 2003 World silver medalist is two wins away from his second consecutive Olympic birth. TheMat.com spoke with McCoy about his preparation for the upcoming Olympic Trials. TheMat.com: You have now won five straight U.S. Nationals titles. How have you been able to keep a separation from the rest of your U.S. competitors? McCoy: I have been blessed. I just try to get better everyday, control what I can and let God handle the rest. TheMat.com: A lot of people in the wrestling community have turned the McCoy vs. Steve Mocco match into a major rivalry. Because of all the fanfare going into the Nationals, were you any more pumped up for your finals match with Mocco? McCoy: I was pumped up because it was one step closer to the Olympics and a win would get me that much closer. I just wanted to go out and wrestle my best. TheMat.com: What did you learn from that match with Mocco? McCoy: How good he is. TheMat.com: You have been so close to winning medals a couple of times on the World level. You broke through last year and captured a silver. Do you think that was a turning point in your career? McCoy: I wouldn't say a turning point. Every year I have wrestled in a World Championship I was one match away from medaling. One mistake on my part was usually the difference. It was nice to win a medal in front of a lot of my friends and family. TheMat.com: You had some big wins last year - beating Alexis Rodriguez at the Pan American Games as well as your World Championships performance. What was the difference for you last year? McCoy: Last year was comparable to most of my years. The success last year was meant to be. Everything happens for a reason. TheMat.com: Being one of only three freestyle Olympians making a run at the Olympic Team this year, a lot of expectations have been placed on your shoulders. With your experience in 2000, do you feel you have a slight advantage over the rest of your weight class? McCoy: 2000 is long gone. It was an incredible experience that no one can take away from me, but what happened in 2000 has nothing to do with this year. I am hoping to wrestle my best and not worry about the past. TheMat.com: You seem to have spent a lot more time in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center this past year. How has that helped you to improve? McCoy: It definitely helps to be in Colorado. The combination of training there and at home has helped me a great deal. TheMat.com: It is always tough for a heavyweight to find capable training partners. Who do you train with on a regular basis and why? McCoy: I am very fortunate to have and abundance of training partners. These guys are one of the main reasons for my success. I workout with the guys that will push me hard and help me to be my best. At home I have the guys on Lehigh's team. Joe Sahl has been one of the best partners I could ask for. Other guys on the team like Jon Trenge, Paul Weibel, Matt Cassidy, Tom Curl, John Hyde and Anthony LiVechhi have been really helpful. I also am fortunate to have Angelo Borzio about 45 minutes away at East Stroudsburg University and Ryan Tobin about an hour away at the University of Pennsylvania. Pat Cummins and Ryan Cummins helped me when I was at Penn State and they still work out with me if I need them. Away from home I work out with guys at the OTC. Kevin Hoy, Mike Faust, Dominic Black, Dean Morrison, Steve Mocco, Dawid Rechul, Daniel Cormier, Mark Munoz, Kellan Fluckiger, Melvin Douglas, and a few times with smaller guys like Lee Fullhart, Cael Sanderson and Mo Lawal. TheMat.com: In 2000, you thought you may be done with making a run at the Olympic Team. Is 2004 your last go-around? McCoy: Yup. TheMat.com: What do you plan to do after this year? McCoy: I'd plan to coach for a few years. Hopefully become a head coach sooner rather than later. I plan to stay involved in freestyle wrestling. I would like to be on the 2008 Olympic Staff.
