First year head coach Pat Marsh's team picked off two victories last week, beating Central of Iowa 22-17 and North Central 30-15 on Saturday, January 6 in the Carver PE Center. Augustana will head to Williamsport, Pennsylvania for the Bud Whitehill National Dual Tournament, which will be held at Lycoming College on January 12 & 13. Senior Jamie Pales (Lake Park HS, Roselle, IL) picked up a pair of victories and he now moves into a tie for 11th place on Augustana's all-time victory list. Pales has a career record of 106-43 and he is tied with former teammate Craig Weinhold, who compiled a 106-68 record from 1996-2000. The next target for Pales will be the 10th place position currently held by Jesse Kennedy who was 117-32 from 1993-97. AUGUSTANA 22, CENTRAL OF IOWA 17 on Saturday, January 6 at home. The Vikings built a 22-3 lead through the first seven matches and then held on to defeat the Flying Dutchmen by a score of 22-17. The match began at 165 pounds and Sean Hoover (Rock Island Alleman HS, Milan, IL) got the Vikings off to a quick start with an 11-6 victory over Andy Gum. Chad Krnac (Plainfield HS, Plainfield, IL) followed with a convincing 14-7 win over Tom Atkinson at 174 pounds. After Joe Broquard (Prairie Central HS, Fairbury, IL) lost a narrow 2-1 decision at 184, Aaron Granell (J.D. Darnall HS, Geneseo, IL) pinned Wes Kalvelage at 2:10 in the 197 pound weight class. Mike Cubalchini (St. Charles HS, St. Charles, IL) beat Garrett Matson 3-2 at heavyweight to push the advantage to 15-3. Marcus Wynn (Macomb HS, Macomb, IL) beat Jeremy Hendrick 7-2 at 125 to make it 18-3 in the team score. Jamie Pales (Lake Park HS, Roselle, IL) beat Tom Paulson at 133 by a score of 14-5 to clinch the victory. AUGUSTANA 30, NORTH CENTRAL 15 on Saturday, January 6 at home. After three matches the score was tied at 6-6 with Sean Hoover (Rock Island Alleman HS, Milan, IL) picking up the Augustana points with a forfeit at 165 pounds. Aaron Granell (J.D. Darnall HS, Geneseo, IL) broke the tie with a pin of Sam Green at the 2:32 mark of the 197 pound match and the Vikings never trailed after that. Marcus Wynn (Macomb HS, Macomb, IL) and Rob Golombek (Streamwood HS, Streamwood, IL) picked up forfeit victories at 125 and 149 pounds respectively. Jamie Pales (Lake Park HS, Roselle, IL) beat Nick McDonald at 133 pounds by a score of 10-5 and Courtney Blythe (Aledo HS, Sherrard, IL) squeaked out a 7-5 win over Matt Janosek at 157 pounds. HEAD COACH PAT MARSH: Pat Marsh, a 1988 Augustana College graduate, is in his first year as the head coach at his alma mater. He served 11 years as an assistant coach for Kevin Puebla and then was named to replace Puebla last spring. So far he has a 5-2 record in dual meets. UP NEXT FOR THE VIKINGS: Augustana will head to Williamsport, Pennsylvania for the Bud Whitehill National Dual Tournament at Lycoming College on January 13-14.
