RALEIGH, N.C. ¯ NC State University Director of Athletics Lee Fowler this week named Carter Jordan as interim head wrestling coach for the Wolfpack for the 2004-05 season. Jordan takes over the program from Bob Guzzo, who announced his retirement effective May 1 following 30 years at the helm. The 39-year-old Jordan, who served as associate head coach for the Wolfpack this past season, has been an assistant coach under Guzzo for the past seven seasons. Jordan will be a candidate to become the permanent head coach following the '04-05 season. "I am deeply honored and very humbled to have this opportunity," Jordan said. "I'm very cognizant of the tremendous responsibility that goes with this position ¯ responsibility to our team, to the university, and to the sport of wrestling." Jordan wrestled as a walk-on at NC State from 1983-86, and was teammates with nine All-Americans and two national champions during that time. Those Wolfpack wrestling teams compiled a dual-match record of 58-19, won the 1983 ACC championship, and finished in the top 20 at the NCAA Tournament three times. After leaving NC State in 1986, Jordan spent seven years as the wrestling coach at Princess Ann Middle School in Virginia Beach, Va., guiding that school to a 35-5 dual-meet record from 1990-96, and in 1994 won the first city championship in any sport in school history. Jordan also worked extensively with Virginia Beach's youth league wrestling programs. Jordan returned to NC State in the fall of 1997 as an administrative assistant and part-time assistant coach with the wrestling program, becoming a full-time assistant coach in 1998. In just five years as head recruiter, Jordan has assembled two national top-10 recruiting classes, and has signed three high school or prep national champions, the first three in NC State history. Three of Jordan's recruits ¯ Scott Garren in 2000, Dustin Kawa in 2001, and Keven Gabrielson in 2002 ¯ have been named to the Amateur Wrestling News All-Rookie Team. In the seven years Jordan has been on the NC State coaching staff, the Wolfpack has produced 20 individual ACC champions and 35 NCAA qualifiers, and compiled a 69-50 overall record in dual matches, 25-10 in conference matches. NC State has won 22 of its last 28 dual matches against ACC opponents and has won three of the last four ACC team championships. "I will always be indebted to Bob Guzzo for preparing me so well to take this next step in my career," Jordan said. "He made sure to involve me in every facet of this program during my time as an assistant coach, and because of his mentoring and guidance, I believe that I'm ready to be a head coach. I can never thank him enough for all that he's done for me." The 39-year-old Jordan and his wife, Janie, live in Raleigh and have three children, Chris, 16, Cole, 13, and Caroline, 12.
