INDIANAPOLIS - The Honorable Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, will serve as honorary chairman of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling May 21-23 at the RCA Dome. The Illinois Congressman, a former high school history teacher and wrestling coach at Yorkville, Ill., is expected to attend the Trials in Indianapolis. "Wrestling is a sport I love and I am honored to be part of the competition that will determine our country's representatives in the Athens Olympic Games," Speaker Hastert said. "We are absolutely delighted that Speaker Hastert will be involved in our Olympic Trials," said Rich Bender, executive director of USA Wrestling, which is headquartered in Colorado Springs, Co. "As a former wrestler and coach, he knows the level of sacrifice and commitment required by the athletes in our sport." Speaker Hastert wrestled collegiately at Wheaton College in Illinois. While teaching government and history at Yorkville High School, he found additional success as a wrestling coach, leading his team to a state championship in 1976. His coaching record also included three runners-up and a third place finish. He served on the Illinois High School Association Rules Committee for Wrestling, as president of the U.S. Wrestling Coaches' Congress and two terms as president of the Illinois Wrestling Coaches' Association. He has also been instrumental in looking to the welfare of the sport with his efforts to revamp Title IX and "clarify" rules in an attempt to preserve collegiate wrestling from the unintended consequences of Title IX. In 1996, Hastert was honored for his efforts and contributions to wrestling as the recipient of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Order of Merit. After 16 years as a teacher, Rep. Hastert was elected to the House of Representatives in 1986. In 1999, he was honored by his colleagues when they elected him to the position of Speaker of the House. He had served as Chief Deputy Majority Whip and had chaired several committees and sub-committees prior to assuming the House leadership. On the state level, he had served three terms in the Illinois General Assembly where he became known for his efforts on legislation for child abuse prevention, property tax reform, educational excellence and economic development. More than 200 wrestlers are expected in Indianapolis to compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling. Competition takes place in three disciplines: Greco-Roman, men's freestlye and women's freestyle. "Having Speaker Hastert involved as honorary chairman makes this event even more special than it already was," said Thomas Major, an Indianapolis attorney and co-chair of the Local Organizing Committee. "It makes us even more determined to put on the best Olympic Wrestling Trials ever." All-session and Single-day tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster.
