Lincoln, Neb. - High school junior Bent Metcalf (Davison, Mich.) was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the FILA Junior Freestyle National Championships on Saturday after a dominating performance at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Metcalf, who won a FILA Greco-Roman national title on Friday, outscored his five opponents 48-5 in winning the gold medal. In the semifinals, Metcalf defeated Alex Tsirtsis (Griffith, Ind./Dave Schultz WC) 3-1 before downing Willy Holst (Prescott, Wis./Minnesota Storm) 14-4 in the finals. Also winning his second national title of the weekend was J.D. Bergman (Oak Harbor, Ohio/Ohio International WC) after his dominating 12-2 win over Phil Davis (Harrisburg, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. In a battle of past Junior National freestyle champion, 2004 NCAA runner-up Ben Askren (Hartford, Wis./MO Elite) defeated Roger Kish (Lapeer, Mich./Minnesota Storm) 8-4 at 84 kg/185 lbs. Kish led the match 3-0 early before Askren battled back for the win. Two prized redshirt freshmen, T.J. Enright (Galloway, Ohio/Ohio International WC) of Ohio State and Mark Perry (Stillwater, Okla./Hawkeye WC) of Iowa captured their weight classes. Enright won all four of his matches at 60 kg/132 lbs., including a 4-2 semifinal win over former Junior National champion Mack Reiter (Jesup, Iowa/Minnesota Storm). In the finals, Enright defeated Tyler McCormick (Leawood, Kan./MO Elite) 5-1. Perry dominated Brian Stith (Hampton, Va./Sunkist Kids) 10-0 in the finals at 74 kg/163 lbs. Nebraska freshman Jon May (Hutchinson, Minn./Nebraska) rolled through the heavyweight division, defeating Chase Wetenkamp (Manitowoc, Wis./Manitowoc WC) 6-1 in the finals at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. At 55 kg/121 lbs., Reece Humphrey (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North WC) defeated Andrew Domingues (Santa Maria, Calif./Minnesota Storm) 7-4 to capture his first FILA Junior national title. Also winning a national title was Patrick McCaffrey (Gleyn Ellyn, Ill./Unattached), who downed Daniel Jackson (Janesville, Wis./Minnesota Storm) 14-4 in the 50 kg/110 lbs. gold-medal match. The Minnesota Storm won the team title. Champions in each weight class will qualify for a partially subsidized international tour for both freestyle and Greco-Roman. The qualifier is determined by placement in each style and each weight class. In years past, champions have qualified for the FILA Junior World Championships. However, this year there will be no FILA Junior World Championships.
