Student-athletes seeking to participate in the U.S. Olympic Education Center (USOEC) University women's wrestling program at Northern Michigan University may now apply for the program. Applications are available through USA Wrestling. Contact National Women's Coach Terry Steiner or Coach Tom Tomeo to receive the application materials. You may call coaches Steiner or Tomeo at 719-598-8181. Their e-mails are tsteiner@usawrestling.org or ttomeo@usawrestling.org Currently, there is a USOEC university wrestling program in men's Greco-Roman wrestling. A women's wrestling program is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2004. A search is now being conducted for a head coach for the USOEC Women's wrestling program. The USOEC is one of only four Olympic Training Centers in the United States, and the only Center located on a college campus. The USOEC's purpose is to provide Olympic aspiring athletes, primarily in non-NCAA sports, the opportunity to continue their education while training to represent the U.S. at the Olympic Games. Women's freestyle wrestling will be contested in the Olympic Games for the first time at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Northern Michigan Univ. provides an array of world-class training facilities and services to support the USOEC student-athletes. In addition to waiving out-of-state tuition fees (approved student-athletes are charged in-state tuition), athletes are provided academic counseling, tutoring, etc. as necessary to achieve success. All fully-approved resident student-athletes in the program will receive a significant amount of financial support. In addition to the university support, all approved student-athletes may also qualify for the federally funded B.J. Stupak Olympic Scholarship Program, depending on their grades and other factors. Successful and motivated women wrestlers who are entering college in the fall, or are currently pursuing an undergraduate college degree, are encouraged to consider this unique new opportunity. Applicants must be seriously pursuing making future U.S. World and Olympic teams.
