PELLA, Iowa - Matt Diehl has resigned from his position as head wrestling coach at Central College. Diehl will continue to work in the Student Support Services office as program coordinator on Central's campus. "It's been an honor to be Central's wrestling coach the past seven years," Diehl said. "It is just a great athletic environment and it's really been a privilege to be a part of such a tremendous athletic program. "We've come a long way in the wrestling program and I've decided to step aside because of my commitment to my wife and my family. Right now, my marriage and my kids are a priority and I can't give as much to the program as I would like." During Diehl's tenure, he recorded a 36-76-1 dual record, including a 9-14 mark with a young squad this past year. He piloted the Dutch to a pair of top-30 NCAA Div. III team finishes and his wrestlers earned all-America recognition seven times. "Matt Diehl has worked hard to turn around the Central College wrestling program for the past seven years," athletic director Al Dorenkamp said. "With a young and growing family, he feels it is time to spend more time in this important area of his life. Coaching is a lifestyle that is very demanding. "Our program has made great strides in many areas. Our numbers have increased significantly over the years. The academic profile and achievement of our wrestling student-athletes has been excellent and we have had several all-Americans during the past few years. Our wrestlers have exhibited excellent sportsmanship and character. "Coach Diehl has involved our wrestling alumni network in supporting our program, and we have hosted numerous camps and clinics over the past seven years that have been good for the image of our institution." A native of Osceola, Diehl is a 1987 Central College graduate. During his collegiate career, Diehl was a two-time national qualifier at 118 pounds, earning all-America honors and winning an Iowa Conference title in 1987. He led the Dutch to an eighth place finish at the national meet. Diehl received his master's degree from the University of Wis.-La Crosse where he served as an assistant wrestling coach. Diehl and his wife, Cathy, have three children. "It has been a hard decision for me to make but ultimately, it's what I needed to do at this point and time in my life," said Diehl. "I know there are great things ahead for Central wrestling." Search for a replacement - Dorenkamp said the search for Diehl's replacement will begin immediately.
