Blacksburg, Va. - Virginia Tech head wrestling coach Keith Mourlam has resigned his position with the school, sources with the Athletics Department confirmed today. "Coach Mourlam has resigned for personal reasons from his position at Virginia Tech," stated Associate Director of Athletics Jon Jaudon. "His resignation is not effective immediately, but Wes Hand will assume the duties of that position at this time." Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Jim Weaver declined further comment. Mourlam was unavailable for comment. In eight seasons at Virginia Tech, Mourlam compiled a record of 50-74-1. His teams twice placed in the top 25 at the NCAA Tournament, finishing 19th in 2000 and 23rd in 2001. Mourlam led Virginia Tech to the 1998 CAA team title and was named the CAA Coach of the Year for that season. The team then moved into the more prestigious Eastern Wrestling League (EWL), where Virginia Tech's highest finish was third in 2000. Virginia Tech has not posted a winning record since the 2000-01 campaign, when the team was 8-7-1. Since then, the Hokies are 11-35 in dual competition, and have not placed higher than seventh in the EWL. Individually, Mourlam has coached two NCAA All-Americans, Chris Martin and Sean Gray in 2000, 22 NCAA Tournament qualifiers, five CAA individual champions and five EWL individual champions. "I dealt a lot with coach Mourlam. He is a good guy. I am disappointed to see him leave," stated Justin Staylor of Great Bridge, Va., who has verbally committed to Virginia Tech for next year. Staylor is projected to compete at 125 lbs. for the Hokies. "I am sure that whoever Virginia Tech finds to step in as the head coach will do a good job." Staylor plans to sign his National Letter of Intent this week and added that the coaching change will not affect his decision to attend Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech will move into the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) next season. Mourlam came to Virginia Tech as a standout coach and collegiate wrestler. The 1977 Iowa graduate has been a part of four NCAA Championship teams - two as a student-athlete in 1975 and '76, and two as the assistant coach at in 1985 and '86. During his senior year, Mourlam was the Big Ten Conference champion and runner-up for the NCAA title at 126 lbs. Following his college career, Mourlam continued competing and was a two-time United States Wrestling Federation freestyle champion in 1981 and '82. Immediately out of college, Mourlam became the assistant coach at the Univ. of Northern Iowa for a two-year stint. He then became an assistant coach at the Univ. of Iowa, for three years (1984-87). A search for a new head coach will begin immediately, according to Assistant Sports Information Director Bryan Johnston.
