2000 Olympian Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) was the only No. 1 seed defeated during the first day of the U.S. National Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., April 9. Bracken was defeated in the quarterfinals at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., losing to No. 8 Oscar Wood (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), 4-0. The U.S. Nationals is the major qualifying event for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling, set for Indianapolis, Ind., May 21-23. The top eight place winners in the Olympic weight divisions qualify for Indianapolis, as well as the top four in the three women's non-Olympic weights. All three of the Olympic medalists in the Greco-Roman field have advanced to the semifinals: 2000 Olympic champion Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/286 lbs., 1996 Olympic silver medalist Brandon Paulson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 55 kg/121 lbs., and 2000 Olympic bronze medalist Garrett Lowney (Appleton, Wis./Minnesota Storm) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Gardner has wrestled well, in spite of a motorcycle accident a week ago in Colorado Springs, where his Harley Davidson was struck by a car. Gardner beat No. 8 Josh Feldman, Pensacola, Fla. (U.S. Navy), 8-1 in the quarterfinals. He will face No. 4 Corey Farkas (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) in the semifinals on Saturday. Farkas upset Gardner last year at the U.S. Nationals in the semifinals. The two 2003 World silver medalists in the freestyle draw advanced to the semifinals with easy wins on Friday night: Cael Sanderson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Kerry McCoy (Bethlehem, Pa./New York AC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Sanderson scored a 10-0 technical fall over Ken Bigley of New York, N.Y., and will face No. 4 Muhammed Lawal (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) in the semifinals on Saturday. McCoy pinned Leonce Crump (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) in 1:30, and will battle unseeded Billy Blunt (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids) in the Saturday semifinals. 2003 World Champion Kristie Marano (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) advanced to the semifinals at 63 kg/138.75 pounds, with a pin over No. 7 Othella Lucas (San Diego, Calif./Cumberland College). A pair of past World Champions were able to beat higher seeds in their weight class at advance to the semifinals in freestyle. 1998 World Champion Sammie Henson (Highland Mills, N.Y./Sunkist Kids), seeded No. 6, beat No. 3 Teague Moore (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC), 7-3. Henson will face No. 2 Mike Mena (Bloomington, Ind./New York AC) in the semifinals. Henson was a 2000 Olympic silver medalist. 1993 World Champion Melvin Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Sunkist Kids), at the No. 5 seed, stopped Dawid Rechul (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), 3-1 in the quarterfinals. He will battle No. 1 Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) in the semifinals. Douglas, at age 40, has made a comeback to attempt to make his third Olympic Team.
