Jim Gruenwald(Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) has been named the 2003 Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year by USA Wrestling. It is the first time that Gruenwald has won this award. Gruenwald placed fourth at 60 kg/132 lbs. at the 2003 World Championships of Greco-Roman wrestling, held in Cretiel, France. It was the highest place finish of any U.S. wrestler at the competition. He also showed some tremendous courage in his final match, when he faced two-time Olympic champion Armen Nazarian in the semifinals. Late in a close match, Gruenwald's left shoulder was dislocated during a throw by Nazarian. Gruenwald, in tears from the pain of the injury and disappointment from the loss, refused a stretcher, getting up on his own and shaking the hand of his opponent. Due to the injury, Gruenwald also lost by injury default in his bronze-medal match to Eusebiu Diaconu of Romania. Gruenwald advanced from his pool competition, in spite of losing one of his matches. He opened with a 6-3 overtime win over Karen Mnatjakanyan of Armenia. In his second match, Gruenwald lost 4-1 to Laszio Bona of Hungary . However that one technical point scored by Gruenwald against Bona turned out to be the difference in pool placing, and Gruenwald advanced. In the quarterfinals, Gruenwald handily defeated Mohamed Ashraf of Egypt, 5-0. For the fourth straight year, Gruenwald placed in the top 10 at the World Championships or Olympic Games. Gruenwald was sixth in 2000 Olympics, eighth in the 2001 World Championships, 10th in the 2002 World Championships and fourth in the 2003 World Championships. He swept the major U.S. domestic events, winning the U.S. Nationals and the World Team Trials. He defeated Glenn Nieradka of the U.S. Army in the finals of both events. Gruenwald won a bronze medal at the 2003 Pan American Games, held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Earlier in the year, he won the gold medal at the Pan American Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala, the qualifying event for the Pan Am Games. Gruenwald won silver medals at the 2003 Dave Schultz Memorial Championships, as well as the 2003 Concord Cup. He also participated in the Titan Games, earning a 1-1 record in the competition. Gruenwald is a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete. He was a three-time National Christian College champion for Maranatha Baptist Bible College, where he was coached by Olympic champion Ben Peterson. Gruenwald is originally from Greendale, Wis., where he won a state high school title. USA Wrestling will be announcing major award winners each day this week on TheMat.com.
