Greco-Roman wrestling in the United States faces a new reality, a non-qualified weight class for the Olympics. With three different wrestlers in the qualifying process, the USA was unable to qualify to compete in the Athens Olympics in 74 kg/163 lbs in Greco-Roman. There is a request for a spot from FILA for the U.S. at this division, but there is doubt that would happen. Russia is the only nation will all seven weights qualified, showing just how difficult this can be. One of the fiercest rivalries in recent seasons has been between No. 1 T.C. Dantzler and No. 2 Keith Sieracki at this division. For years, Sieracki had the edge, but Dantzler claimed the top spot with wins over Sieracki at the World Team Trials for two straight years. Both have been to the World Championships, but neither has earned a placement at that level. There is probably no doubt that Sieracki will move up to 84 kg, where he competes often and has many wins over U.S. stars there. Dantzler may also give that division a try right away, and see if he can fill in his frame with even more power. There are qualifying spots for the Olympic Trials at 163 pounds, so it might make sense just to compete here at Nationals and move up or down at the Trials. Holding down the No. 3 Team USA ranking is Darryl Christian, who has been near the top in recent seasons. Christian and Sieracki competed in the final two qualifiers for the Olympic spot, and were unable to complete the task. Christian may stay at this division to seek a high spot on the National Team for the future. Christian won the Dave Schultz Memorial when Dantzler did not compete in the finals due to injury. A true force at this division is college-age star Ken Cook, who was a U.S. Nationals runner-up and has beaten many talented opponents. Cook is doing Greco-Roman full-time and is a serious title contender. Cook beat Christian twice this year, at the Sunkist Kids International and the New York AC Christmas Championships. His only loss at the New York event was to a star from Belarus. Cook wrestled up at 84 kg at the Dave Schultz Memorial and placed fourth. Steven Woods is experienced and talented and always a threat. He is expected to go down to 145.5 pound if he can, but may also stay at this weight for U.S. Nationals. He is already in the Olympic Trials through the Armed Forces Championships. It is hard to determine who the rest of the athletes who might be capable of placing high at Las Vegas until they weigh in and identify themselves as being at this division. 2000 Olympian Heath Sims remains capable of beating strong opponents . Keith Barkers has remained competitive in recent years, competing for the U.S. Marines. Jess Hargrave, Josh Henson and Curtis Barnes should also be among the challengers based upon recent performances. Cheney Haight has qualified for the Olympic Team Trials through the Regionals, and has improved through the USOEC program. For the first time ever, the U.S. enters an Olympic year with a weight class that has not been qualified for the Olympics. With that the case, it is now a choice of individual athletes where they will compete and why. We will know in in a week what those choices were for each of the individuals who have competed at this weight in recent years. THEMAT.COM RANKINGS FOR APRIL 2004 74 KG/163 LBS.
