21 wrestlers win titles at the inaugural Veterans Folkstyle National Championships

Cedar Falls, Iowa - The first-ever Veterans Folkstyle Nationals started with a bang, as 60 wrestlers competed in 21 weight classes spread across four age divisions at the UNI-Dome on Saturday, April 3. 17 states were represented in the competition. Wrestlers born between 1967 and 1974 compete in Division A. Wrestlers born between 1959 and 1966 compete in Division B. Wrestlers born between 1951 and 1958 compete in Division C and wrestlers competing in Division D were born in 1950 or before. In Division A, Keith Johnson of Wisconsin (139 lbs.), David Ackerman of Georgia (152), Michael Kelly of Illinois (167), Jeff Anderson of Illinois (188), Chris Gilliam of Illinois (214) and John Lame of Iowa (HWT) won titles. Johnson and Anderson each won three matches in their respective four-man weight classes to win the gold. Division B was loaded, as nearly half (28) of the 60-man Veterans field competed in this age group. Winning Division B titles were Mark LaVasseur of Minnesota (128), Jamey Kasser of Ohio (139), Peter Mankowich of Missouri (152), Mark Morgan of Mississippi (168), Anthony Porcelli of Iowa (188), Wes Roper of Missouri (214), Keith Curtis of Kansas (HWT 1) and Bob Henig of New Jersey (HWT 2). Roper rolled through a six-man bracket, winning three matches on his way to the title. Also winning titles with three victories were LaVasseur, Kasser, Mankowich, Morgan and Porcelli. LaVasseur captured a Veterans Greco-Roman national title last year. Kasser and Porcelli are former Veterans freestyle national champions. In Division C, capturing titles were Russ Cozart of Florida (152), Brad Smith of Iowa (168), David Hartman of Alabama (188) and Dave Wadsworth of West Virginia (214). Cozart has now won titles in Veterans freestyle, Greco-Roman and folkstyle, becoming the first Veterans wrestler to win national titles in all three styles. Division D champions were John Bartello of Iowa (139) and Dan Thomas of Kansas (HWT). The Veterans will next compete in freestyle and Greco-Roman in Las Vegas, Nev. on April 9.
