U.S. men's freestyle stars dominate the West Regional Olympic Team Trials Qualifier

Battleground, Wash. - Three wrestlers either previously or currently members of the U.S. National Team captured titles at the men's freestyle West Regional Olympic Team Trials Qualifier on Saturday afternoon. Winners at each weight class qualify themselves for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Wrestling in Indianapolis, Ind., May 21-23.    Current U.S. National Team member Kirk White (Dave Schultz WC) won the gold medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. He defeated James Medeiros (Sunkist Kids) 10-0 in the finals. Medeiros, who competes at Fresno State, is seeking an Olympic Redshirt year.    Two-time U.S. National Team member Chad Lamer (Hawkeye WC) defeated former Oklahoma State NCAA champion Mark Munoz (California) 9-2 to win the gold medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.    2001 U.S. World Team member and 2000 Olympic Team Trials runner-up Dominic Black (U.S. Army) defeated Kellan Fluckiger (Sunkist Kids) 4-0 in the 120 kg/264.5 lbs. final. Black normally competes at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., but moved up in weight for this competition.    Danny Felix (Sunkist Kids), a 2000 U.S. Nationals runner-up, defeated Dane Valdez (Colorado) 3-2 in overtime at 60 kg/132 lbs. to qualify for the Trials.    Also winning their weight classes were Angel Alegre (California) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Oregon assistant coach Jeremy Ensrud (Oregon) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Central Michigan assistant coach Tony Gansen (Michigan) at 84 kg/185 lbs.    The next qualifying event for men's freestyle will be the 2004 U.S. National Championships, held in Las Vegas, Nev., April 9-10.
