St. Louis, Mo. - The National Wrestling Media Association, the national professional organization for wrestling journalists, has named the recipients of its Annual Wrestling Journalist Awards. The NWMA has honored the top wrestling journalists in the following categories: Broadcaster of the Year, Print Journalist of the Year, Photographer of the Year, Publicist/SID of the Year, Publication of the Year and Web Page of the Year. Candidates were nominated by the NWMA members. Wrestling Web Page of the Year - TheGuillotine.com This webpage covers wrestling in the state of Minnesota, and is managed by the staff of The Guillotine, the state wrestling newspaper. The Beshey family runs the Guillotine, and has covered wrestling in the state for many years. Jeff Beshey is involved with the management of the webpage, which has been in existance for seven years. The page covers all levels of wrestling, including youth, high school, college and international levels. The high school results section is extensive. There is also an active forum on the web page, where wrestling people in the state share ideas and information. A majority of the wrestling web pages around the country cover state or local wrestling activity, and the Guillotine is a great example of how this kind of internet coverage can help build wrestling at those levels. Wrestling Publication of the Year - Nebraska Wrestling Illustrated This publication is in its fifth year, edited by Mike Carnes, who also serves as an editor of the Gretna Guide and News in Nebraska. Carnes started the Nebraska Wrestling Illustrated as a PDF file that was sent to readers via e-mail, then could be printed off by the subscriber. For four years, Carnes would develop a publication that was 25-30 pages long, and would cover all aspects of wrestling in the state, from youth to high school to college and international. Photography has been an important part of the coverage of wrestling in the publication. This year, he switched format for the publication to an on-line paid subscriber service, and he has hundreds of subscribers all across the state and region. By going to a web-page format, Carnes has been able to get more results and features posted, as well as provide information on a more timely basis. His innovative approach to using current technology for a wrestling publication has revolutionized the coverage of wrestling in Nebraska. Wrestling Print Journalist of the Year - Andy Hamilton, Iowa City Press Citizen Hamilton is in his fifth year with the Iowa City Press Citizen, where he covers the Univ. of Iowa wrestling team, the Olympic-level wrestlers in the region, as well as high school wrestling. He has covered the last six Iowa state high school wrestling championships. Covering the Univ. of Iowa football team is one of his other regular beats. He also has experience covering wrestling with the Daily Iowan (the student newspaper at the Univ. of Iowa) as well as during a stint on the staff at the Ames Tribune. Hamilton's articles show an understanding of wrestling and an insight into the athletes and coaches involved in the sport. Wrestling Photographer of the Year - Andre Reddington, Amateur Wrestling News Reddington started photography in high school and has been shooting for 17 years. He worked hard to perfect his skills in the darkroom, and has now joined the conversion to high-quality digital photography. He has been a staff photographer for Amateur Wrestling News, one of the major national wrestling publications, for many years. Reddington is respected for the quality of the photos he takes of amateur wrestling. "What I love best is capturing that perfect moment in time and printing it larger than life.
