St. Louis, Mo. - With the 2004 NCAA wrestling team race decided, Oklahoma State clinched its 32nd team title last night, the new battle becomes the one for second place, and Iowa has put a stranglehold on that spot as well. The Hawkeyes won three of four matches in the final consolation round and placing matches on Saturday morning at the Savvis Center to run the team's total to 78 team points. The next closest teams are Lehigh and Ohio State, tied with 73.5 team points. Iowa has two wrestlers, 141-pound Cliff Moore and 197-pound Ryan Fulsaas, in this evening's championship finals. Ohio State has one wrestler, 285-pound Tommy Rowlands, in the finals and Lehigh has one wrestler, 165-pound Troy Letters in the finals. The only thing that could push Lehigh into second place is an unlikely win by fall for Letters of three-time All-American Tyrone Lewis of Oklahoma State and two losses by the Iowa finalists. Rounding out the top 10 team scores are Illinois (69.5, 1 finalist), Nebraska (68.5, 2 finalists), Iowa State (66, 1 finalist), Oklahoma (62.5), Minnesota (61.5, 1 finalist) and Michigan (60.5). Champions in tonight's session will earn four team points. The top four teams will receive trophies. Leading Oklahoma State in the consolation round was two-time NCAA champion Johnny Thompson, who blew threw Travis Lee of Cornell, 10-8, and Darrell Vasquez of Cal Poly, 6-3, to place third at 133 lbs. Thompson defeated four wrestlers who defeated him during the season in this year's NCAA Tournament. Also placing third for the Cowboys was Jake Rosholt at 184 lbs., who defeated Brian Glynn of Illinois, 5-3, and Paul Bradley of Iowa, 6-5. Helping the Hawkeyes to their second-place run so far has been Tyler Nixt, who placed third at 174 lbs. Nixt dominated Eric Hauan of Northern Iowa, 6-1, and Brad Dillon of Lehigh, 9-3, to end his season. Perhaps the most impressive run through this year's consolation bracket was by Ohio State 197-pounder J.D. Bergman. The freshman lost his first match of the tournament in overtime, and then won his seven consolation matches, the last a 5-4 win over Ryan Bader of Arizona State, to place third. All four of the defending champions in the consolation bracket placed high. After Lee lost to Thompson, he came back to place fifth. Teyon Ware of Oklahoma (141 lbs.) placed sixth. Ryan Bertin of Michigan (157) defeated Alex Tirapelle of Illinois, the wrestler he defeated in the NCAA finals last year, to place third, and Rosholt placed third. Scott Moore of Virginia (141) also ended a stellar senior season. Moore finished with a 51-1 record, including 34 falls, after placing third in this year's NCAA Tournament. The championship matches are slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. (CST). 2004 NCAA Championships at St. Louis, Mo., March 18-20 Placing Matches 125 3rd - Sam Hazewinkel (Oklahoma) maj. dec.
