St. Louis, Mo. - Entering the 2004 NCAA Tournament at the Savvis Center, two-time defending champion Johnny Thompson of Oklahoma State (133 lbs.) knew that he had to fight an uphill battle to win an NCAA title. That battle went back downhill after Friday morning's quarterfinal session, when Thompson lost to Josh Moore of Penn State, 8-7. Even with the devastating loss, Oklahoma State remains in first place in the team standings with 61 team points. The Cowboys have four semifinalists. Iowa, also with four semifinalists, sits in seconds place with 55 team points. Rounding out the top five are Nebraska (44.5-two semifinalists), Oklahoma (44.5-three semifinalists) and Illinois (42-two semifinalists). Moore cradled Thompson in the first period to take a 5-0 lead, but after Thompson tied the match at 5-5 in the second period, Moore needed to become aggressive again. And he was, scoring another takedown late in the third period to take an 8-6 lead, and eventually hold on for the win. Moore will face freshman Darrell Vasquez of Cal Poly in the semifinals. Vasquez, like Moore, blew a large lead before coming back with a 9-8 victory in the second tiebreaker against Mark Jayne of Illinois. Vasquez scored three first-period takedowns to hold a 6-2 advantage, but Jayne battled back, eventually tying the match at 8-8. In the first tiebreaker, each wrestler rode out the other. In the second tiebreaker, Vasquez rode out Jayne in the first half, and earned an escape in the second half for the win. At 125 lbs., Vic Moreno of Cal Poly upset second-seeded Luke Eustice of Iowa, a 2002 NCAA finalist, 3-1 in overtime. Moreno will face Kyle Ott of Illinois in the semifinals. Another major upset occurred at 197 lbs., where Iowa's Ryan Fulsaas, seeded 10th, defeated second seed Chris Skretkowicz of Hofstra, 7-6. Fulsaas scored offensive points in all three points in what is currently the biggest win of his career. The Hawkeye will go for his next biggest win in the semifinals against Sean Stender of Northern Iowa. Fulsaas is 2-1 in his career against Stender. In their only meeting this year, Stender recorded a 7-6 decision. Three freshmen advanced to the semifinals: Vasquez, Sam Hazewinkel of Oklahoma (125) and Ben Askren of Missouri (174). Hazewinkel dominated 2001 All-American Mario Stuart of Lehigh 12-5 to move on to the semifinals where he will face two-time All-American Jason Powell of Nebraska. Hazewinkel and Powell have split their season series, with Powell winning 3-1 in a dual meet and Hazewinkel winning 5-2 in the Big XII finals. Askren posted a dramatic 12-7 overtime win over Brad Dillon of Lehigh. Askren and Dillon traded leads throughout the match. But in overtime, Askren came out on top of a scramble, and also put Dillon to his back for the win. Askren will face Tyler Nixt of Iowa in the semifinals. Six of seven defending or former NCAA champions will compete in Friday evening's semifinals. 133-pound Travis Lee of Cornell pinned Matt Sanchez of Cal State-Bakersfield in the third period. Lee trailed in the match 3-0 in the second period, but came back to take a commanding 9-3 lead before recording the fall. Lee will face Zach Roberson of Iowa State in the semifinals. Teyon Ware of Oklahoma, the defending 141-pound NCAA champion, won a rematch with Dylan Long of Northern Iowa, the wrestler Ware defeated in the NCAA finals last year. Ware won this year's match 4-3. Ware will next face Matt Murray of Nebraska in the semifinals. Murray won the only meeting this year between the two, defeating Ware 3-3 in the Big XII Tournament. Michigan's Ryan Bertin also avenged a loss, defeating Oklahoma State's Johnny Hendricks 7-4 in a 157-pound quarterfinal. Bertin will face undefeated Matt Gentry of Stanford in the semifinals. 2002 NCAA champion Greg Jones of West Virginia stayed undefeated with a 3-2 win over Brian Glynn of Illinois. Jones scored a late third-period takedown for the win. Jones will face Paul Bradley of Iowa, the 10th seed, who defeated Ben Wissel of Purdue, 4-3 to advance to the semifinals. Also at 184 lbs., defending champion Jake Rosholt of Oklahoma State defeated Nate Mesyn of Michigan State 4-1. Rosholt will face Ben Heizer of Northern Illinois in the semifinals. Also a 2002 NCAA champion, heavyweight Tommy Rowlands of Ohio State squeaked out an 8-6 win over Bode Ogunwole of Harvard. Ogunwole scored two takedowns on Rowlands in the loss. Rowlands will face Leonce Crump in the semifinals. Rowlands defeated Crump 3-2 in their only meeting this year, and is 2-1 lifetime against the Sooner heavyweight. Five wrestlers entered this year's NCAA Tournament undefeated. All five have advanced to the semifinals: 157-pound Matt Gentry of Stanford (39-0), 184-pound Greg Jones of West Virginia (24-0), 141-pound Scott Moore of Virginia (49-0), 157-pound Jake Percival of Ohio (37-0) and 157-pound Alex Tirapelle of Illinois (33-0). The semifinals will begin at 6:00 p.m. (CST). Notes: Minnesota, Oklahoma State and Pittsburgh were deducted one team point from their team scores for unsportsmanlike conduct… 184-pound Paul Bradley of Iowa is the lowest seed in the semifinals (12th)… The winners of the next consolation round will earn a spot as All-Americans… The top four seeds at 157, 165 and 285 all advanced to the semifinals… Total number of semifinalists by conference: ACC (1), Big Ten (14), Big XII (11), EIWA (5), EWL (2), MAC (2), PAC-10 (4), West Region (1)… 2004 NCAA Championships at St. Louis, Mo., March 18-20 Semifinal Matchups 125 Jason Powell (Nebraska) vs. Sam Hazewinkel (Oklahoma) Kyle Ott (Illinois) vs. Vic Moreno (Cal Poly) 133 Travis Lee (Cornell) vs. Zach Roberson (Iowa State) Josh Moore (Penn State) vs. Darrell Vasquez (Cal Poly) 141 Scott Moore (Virginia) vs. Cliff Moore (Iowa) Teyon Ware (Oklahoma) vs. Matt Murray (Nebraska) 149 Jesse Jantzen (Harvard) vs. Ryan Churella (Michigan) Dustin Manotti (Cornell) vs. Zack Esposito (Oklahoma State) 157 Alex Tirapelle (Illinois) vs. Jake Percival (Ohio) Ryan Bertin (Michigan) vs. Mattt Gentry (Stanford) 165 Tyrone Lewis (Oklahoma State) vs. Jacob Volkmann (Minnesota) Matt King (Edinboro) vs. Troy Letters (Lehigh) 174 Chris Pendleton (Oklahoma State) vs. Ryan Lange (Purdue) Ben Askren (Missouri) vs. Tyler Nixt (Iowa) 184 Greg Jones (West Virginia) vs. Paul Bradley (Iowa) Jake Rosholt (Oklahoma State) vs. Ben Heizer (Northern Illinois) 197 Damion Hahn (Minnesota) vs. Ryan Bader (Arizona State) Sean Stender (Northern Iowa) vs. Ryan Fulsaas (Iowa) 285 Tommy Rowlands (Ohio State) vs. Leonce Crump (Oklahoma) Matt Feast (Pennsylvania) vs. Pat Cummins (Penn State)
