St. Louis, Mo. - Oklahoma State took over the team lead at the 2004 NCAA Championships at the Savvis Center on Thursday evening, and placed a tournament-high seven wrestlers in the quarterfinal round, which will begin on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. (CST). The Cowboys won seven of eight matches in the second round, the same total during its championship run of 2003, to tally 30 team points. Illinois is in second place with 28 team points, followed by Nebraska (25), Iowa (23.5) and Minnesota (23.5) in the top five. "You can assume nothing," Oklahoma State head coach John Smith said. "It's easy to have a bad match. Individually, we've had some tough matches. We're taking that step to win that 32nd national title." Smith referred to Friday's quarterfinal and semifinal sessions as "Hunger Day." In 2003, five of the Cowboys quarterfinalists moved on to the semifinals. In 2000, the Cowboys placed six in the quarterfinals in this same St. Louis arena, only to see five of them lose. "We have a different makeup of the team," Smith said while comparing his 2000 and 2004 squads. "We're wrestling better as a team right now. It's about one round at a time." Advancing for the Cowboys while also paying back one of his early-season losses was two-time defending champion Johnny Thompson (133 lbs.), who downed Josh Keefe of Tennessee-Chattanooga 10-5. Keefe defeated Thompson 11-9 in a November dual meet. "That was a real loss (Thompson) had against Keefe," Smith said. "Now for him, he knows the direction he needs to go in. Johnny has been here before." Thompson will wrestle Josh Moore of Penn State in the quarterfinals. Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Nebraska are tied for the second-most quarterfinalists with five each. All seven former NCAA champions will compete in Friday morning's quarterfinal session. 133-pound Travis Lee of Cornell dominated Pat Dowty of Eastern Illinois 19-4. Lee will face Matt Sanchez of Cal State-Bakersfield in the quarterfinals. Teyon Ware of Oklahoma, the defending 141-pound NCAA champion, recorded a third-period pin over Jesse Brock of Boise State. Ware's quarterfinal match will be a rematch of last year's NCAA finals, as he will face Dylan Long of Northern Iowa. Ware won that match 6-4 in overtime. Michigan's Ryan Bertin recorded his second major decision of the tournament, defeating Scott Garren of North Carolina State 10-2. In the quarterfinals, Bertin will face Johnny Hendricks of Oklahoma State. Hendricks recorded a 6-5 overtime decision over Bertin at the National Duals this year. 2002 NCAA champion Greg Jones of West Virginia stayed undefeated with a 3-1 win over Minnesota's Josh McLay. Jones will face Brian Glynn of Illinois in the quarterfinals. Also at 184 lbs., defending champion Jake Rosholt of Oklahoma State destroyed Dan Pitsch of Oregon State, 16-0. Rosholt will wrestle Nate Mesyn of Michigan State in the quarterfinals. Also a 2002 NCAA champion, heavyweight Tommy Rowlands of Ohio State dominated Matt Wilcox of Clarion before pinning him in the second period. Rowlands will face unseeded Bode Ogunwole of Harvard in the quarterfinals. Continuing his run of upsets is 149-pound David Dies of Brown, who defeated Big Ten runner-up Matt Storniolo of Penn State 8-3. Dies, unseeded in the tournament, will face top seed and two-time All-American Jesse Jantzen of Harvard in the quarterfinals. Jantzen has defeated Dies twice this season, the latest a 6-5 decision in the EIWA finals. Also making an impressive run in the NCAA Tournament is true freshman Mark McKnight of Buffalo at 125 lbs. McKnight defeated Mike Mormile of Cornell 7-5 to move into the quarterfinals, where he will face Kyle Ott of Illinois. Five wrestlers entered this year's NCAA Tournament undefeated. All five have advanced to the quarterfinals: 157-pound Matt Gentry of Stanford (38-0), 184-pound Greg Jones of West Virginia (23-0), 141-pound Scott Moore of Virginia (48-0), 157-pound Jake Percival of Ohio (36-0) and 157-pound Alex Tirapelle of Illinois (32-0).
