The "di Silvestri Wrestling Center" located on the campus of Monsignor Farrell High School on Staten Island, announces its Grand Opening Clinic/Spring Registration to be held on Wednesday, March 10 at 6:30 PM. The center was contributed by Farrell wrestling alumnus Gary di Silvestri, who donated the building addition to be used by his alma mater for both wrestling and weight training. The center is now expanding to effectively utilize the state of the art facility to benefit not only the Farrell athletes, but to help grow the sport of wrestling all over Staten Island and all of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The focus of the center is the climate controlled 40' X 80" wrestling room, which has wall-to-wall mats and padded walls. To that end, the center will provide a number of activities this spring designed to increase the level of wrestling in the sport of wrestling on Staten Island and the entire metropolitan area. Beginning with a one-night clinic on March 10th at 6:30 PM, the center will be open from March 14 through the middle of June. The Clinic on March 10th will feature former National Team member and former West Point Coach Tod Giles. Tod is both an accomplished athlete and coach and will be doing an introduction to wrestling the international styles. In addition to Tod's technique session, there will be a short session on the International rules. Cost for the Grand Opening Clinic will be $10.00 per participant. Those who wish to sign up on that evening for the Staten Island Wrestling Club can do so for a 10% discount. All participants must also hold a current USA Wrestling membership card, which will be available at registration. The center will host the "Staten Island Wrestling Club" for athletes who want to continue the development of their skills by participating in the International Styles of Wrestling. Greco Roman practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 PM and Freestyle Practice will also be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-8:30. Greco Practice will be conducted by former New York Athletic Club, nationally ranked Greco Roman specialist Jason Bross. Freestyle practices will be overseen by Bill Crum and will feature some guest clinicians from time to time. Cost for participating in any or all club practices is $225 for the spring. All participants must also hold a current USA Wrestling membership card, which will be available at registration. The center will also play host to its "Kids Club" which will conduct introductory sessions in all wrestling on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00-7:00. Kids Club sessions will be under the supervision of Farrell and NYC Empire Games coach Lou DeStefano. Cost for participating in any or all club practices is $195 for the spring. All participants must also hold a current USA Wrestling membership card, which will be available at registration. In addition to those activities, the center will be the Staten Island site for the Metropolitan Wrestling Association's "Metropolitan Wrestling Academy." The Academy is the MWA's program which is being offered free of charge to athletes from New York City and Hudson County to develop their skills during the off-season. Those sessions will be held on Monday nights from 7:00-9:00. (In addition to the Staten Island site, the MWA conducts weekly practices in Hudson County, Manhattan and Brooklyn.) There will be a number of prominent guest coaches participating in the MWA sessions. Last year's guests included Olympic Champion Jeff Blatnick, World Silver Medallist Kerry McCoy, National Developmental coach Ike Anderson and World and Olympic Coach Joe DeMeo. It is anticipated that this year's guests will be equally impressive. All participants must also hold a current USA Wrestling membership card, which will be available at registration. The center will run under the direction of Bill Crum, a nationally prominent wrestling coach, referee and administrator. Crum has held many positions within the wrestling community, having served on the Board of Directors or staff of USA Wrestling for 20 years. In addition to being the current Executive Director of the Metropolitan Wrestling Association, his most recent project was serving as the Competition Manger for the highly successful "World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling" held in September at Madison Square Garden.
