Columbus, Ohio - Coming into the 2004 Big Ten Championships, Purdue 141-pounder Doug Withstandley was the last wrestler anyone expected to compete for a conference title. The sophomore from Jackson, N.J. had lost his last five matches of the season, and six of his last seven. But all that counts in NCAA wrestling is how you perform in March, and Withstandley is currently 2-0 this March, pulling off upset wins over No. 2 seed Andy Simmons of Michigan State, 4-3, and No. 7 seed Dewitt Driscoll of Penn State, 15-9, to advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten Championships. The wins also seal an NCAA birth for Withstandley. Against Simmons, Withstandley scored a takedown with 30 seconds remaining, and held off a late attack by the Spartan freshman for the win. Withstandley will meet up with freshman Michael Martin of Illinois in the semifinals. Martin, who entered the tournament with a 14-13 record, upset Coyte Cooper of Indiana, 10-8 in overtime. Martin led 8-5 before Cooper scored a takedown at the end of regulation. With a riding time advantage of over one minute, Cooper sent the match into overtime. Martin got deep on single-legs twice in overtime, finishing the second attempt for the win. Simmons was the first top-four seed to lose in the tournament, but he was joined near the end of the quarterfinal round by No. 1 seed Brian Glynn of Illinois (184). Glynn dropped a 3-2 decision to Josh McLay of Minnesota in the quarterfinals. McLay scored a takedown with only 16 seconds remaining in the match, taking a 3-1 lead on his way to the win. Controversy circled another No. 2 seed, as 165-pound Pat Owen of Michigan, the No. 2 seed, was thrown to his back from a body lock by Michigan State's Matt McCarty. The official called a pin, but then following a discussion with the other mat official, it was ruled that Owen was knocked out prior to the pin, leaving him defenseless to the throw. Owen then battled back from a 6-0 deficit to win the match 11-9, scoring a reversal with five seconds left in the match for the win. Owen then went on to defeat Ben Hay of Illinois to advance to the semifinals against All-American Jacob Volkmann of Minnesota. Illinois' Kyle Ott avoided an upset at 125 pounds with an 11-8 victory over All-American Bobbe Lowe of Minnesota. Lowe led 4-2 heading into the third period, before Ott scored on a reversal and three takedowns in the final period to wear down Lowe and come away with the win. Ott will meet up with Tom Clum of Wisconsin in the semifinals. Also at 125 pounds, Joe Dubuque of Indiana stunned the crowd by putting freshman Mark Moos of Michigan on his back twice in the first period. Dubuque led 10-1 after the period on his way to a 16-6 win. He will face All-American Luke Eustice of Iowa in the semifinals. Following the quarterfinals, Minnesota holds a slim lead in the team race with 64.5 points. Iowa is in second with 64, followed by Michigan (50.5), Illinois (49) and Penn State (49) in the top five. Michigan State is the only team that did not post a win in the first session, losing all 10 of its matches. Two wrestlers, 133-pound Foley Dowd of Michigan and 157-pound All-American Alex Tirapelle of Illinois, continued to stay undefeated on the season following their respective quarterfinal victories. Dowd is now 14-0 on the year, and Tirapelle has a record of 28-0. Quarterfinal winners clinched a spot in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The Big Ten Conference is allocated 72 spots for the NCAA Tournament. The top seven placewinners at each weight automatically advance to the national tournament along with two wildcards voted on by Big Ten coaches. The semifinals and consolation rounds will begin at 6:00 p.m. (EST). 2004 Big Ten Championships at Columbus, Ohio, March 6-7 Quarterfinal Results 125 #1 Luke Eustice (Iowa) dec. #8 Adam Smith (Penn St.), 5-1 #4 Joe Dubuque (Indiana) maj. dec. #5 Mark Moos (Michigan), 17-6 #3 Kyle Ott (Illinois) dec. #6 Bobbe Lowe (Minnesota), 11-8 #2 Tom Clum (Wisconsin) dec. #7 John Velez (Northwestern), 9-2 133 #1 Foley Dowd (Michigan) pinned #8 Nick Spatola (Indiana), 4:20 #4 Ed Gutnik (Wisconsin) dec. #5 Rene Hernandez (Purdue), 8-5 #3 Mark Jayne (Illinois) by inj. default over #6 Jesse Leng (Ohio St.) #2 Josh Moore (Penn St.) pinned #7 Quincy Osborn (Minnesota), 2:33 141 #1 Cliff Moore (Iowa) maj. dec. #8 Clark Forward (Michigan), 16-5 #4 Tommy Owen (Minnesota) dec. #5 Tyler Laudon (Wisconsin), 8-6 ot #6 Michael Martin (Illinois) dec. #3 Coyte Cooper (Indiana), 10-8 ot Doug Withstandley (Purdue) dec. #7 Dewitt Driscoll (Penn St.), 15-9 149 #1 Ryan Churella (Michigan) pinned #8 Darren McKnight (Michigan St.), 6:44 #4 Jeff Ratliff (Ohio St.) dec. #5 Anton Dietzen (Illinois), 12-9 #3 Matt Storniolo (Penn St.) pinned #6 Dan Jankowski (Purdue), 2:10 #2 Ty Eustice (Iowa) pinned #7 Josh Ballard (Northwestern), 6:53 157 #1 Alex Tirapelle (Illinois) pinned #8 Mike Kimberlin (Northwestern), 4:34 #5 Brad Harper (Purdue) dec. #4 Joe Johnston (Iowa), 7-5 2ot #6 Matt Nagel (Minnesota) dec. #3 Tony Turner (Wisconsin), 8-4 #2 Ryan Bertin (Michigan) dec. #7 James Woodall (Penn St.), 9-5 165 #1 John Clark (Ohio St.) pinned #8 Jarrad Turner (Wisconsin), 3:55 #4 Cole Pape (Iowa) dec. #5 Kelly Flaherty (Wisconsin), 7-5 #3 Jacob Volkmann (Minnesota) dec. #6 Nick Hayes (Northwestern), 10-5 #2 Pat Owen (Michigan) dec. #7 Ben Hay (Illinois), 5-2 174 #1 Tyler Nixt (Iowa) maj. dec. #8 Anthony Magistrelli (Ohio St.), 17-4 #5 Pete Freidl (Illinois) dec. #4 Ralph DeNisco (Wisconsin), 5-3 ot #3 Jon Duncombe (Minnesota) pinned Brady Richardson (Indiana), 5:59 #2 Ryan Lange (Purdue) dec. #7 Nick Roy (Michigan), 4-3 184 #8 Josh McLay (Minnesota) dec. #1 Brian Glynn (Illinois), 3-2 #5 Paul Bradley (Iowa) dec. #4 Blake Kaplan (Ohio St.), 4-2 #6 Ben Wissel (Purdue) dec. #3 Brady Reinke (Wisconsin), 6-4 ot #2 Eric Bradley (Penn St.) dec. #7 Nate Mesyn (Michigan St.), 6-3 197 #1 Damion Hahn (Minnesota) maj. dec. #8 Matt Delguyd (Northwestern), 10-2 #4 Pat DeGain (Indiana) pinned #5 Ryan Flaherty (Wisconsin), 0:49 #3 J.D.
