The 2004 Armed Forces Championships are set to be held March 6-7 in New Orleans, La. at Rummel High School. This event will feature the top men's freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers who are currently active in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Greco-Roman portion of the 2004 Armed Forces Championships will serve as a qualifying event for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Wrestling. The champion in all seven Greco-Roman weight classes will qualify for the Trials event. Thus, the 2004 Armed Forces Championships are the first step towards U.S. wrestlers earning a spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team. The event is run in a dual-meet format, similar to the World Cup. Each military squad will face each other once with individual medal winners being decided by overall record and classification points. Last year, the U.S. Army team came away with a 3-0 record in both the men's freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions and had six individual gold medalists in freestyle and three individual gold medalists in Greco-Roman. Admission is free to the public for both days. At the conclusion of each day, a free youth wrestling clinic will be held at the Southern Regional Training Center in Metairie, La. For more information on this event, contact tournament director Rob Hermann at (850) 452-3806, ext. 313. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Wrestling are May 21-23 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Ind.
