USA Wrestling will host its second annual U.S. Open Collegiate Nationals in River Falls, Wis. on March 11-12. This event offers any college wrestler enrolled in school an opportunity for a major national championship at the end of their season. The event is in the collegiate style (folkstyle). Athletes in the tournament come from NCAA Div. I, Div. II or Div. III teams, as well as from NAIA, NJCAA and NCWA programs. The competition will be held at the Knowles Center at the Univ. of Wisconsin-River Falls in River Falls, Wis. "Many top schools have expressed an interest in competing this year," said USA Wrestling Director of National Events Pete Isais. "The quality of the tournament will be excellent." In order for an athlete to receive a seed at his weight class, USA Wrestling must receive their entry by Monday, March 8. The fee for those who register by March 8 is $25. Others may enter right up until the registration closes on Thursday, March 11 from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. These are considered late entries, and the fee is $30 per athlete. These athletes will not receive a seed, and will be drawn into the brackets. All entry fees are payable to Wisconsin USA Wrestling. Among the top programs that have indicated they may send competitors this year are Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan State, Iowa, Ohio State, Northwestern, Virginia, Wisconsin, Northern Colorado, Air Force, Wyoming, Edinboro, Northern Iowa, North Dakota State, Central Michigan, Wisconsin, UW-Parkside and Upper Iowa. Others teams are expected. The first U.S. Open Collegiate Nationals was held last year, and featured many talented athletes from a variety of college programs. Included were varsity non-starters, athletes on redshirt year and others. Athletes from the Univ. of Minnesota won four of the nine weight classes contested. The tournament is an Open competition, in order to comply with NCAA eligibility rules. Please check with your institutional compliance officer to determine your eligibility to participate. Champions from this event qualify for a 2004 international wrestling tour to Bulgaria. The cost of this tour is to be determined. Athlete check in will be on Thursday, March 11 from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Athletes must clarify the weight class they will compete at during check-in. There will be a $10 weight class change fee for athletes who fails to make the weight that is clarified at check-in. A current USA Wrestling membership card is required and can be purchased at the event. On Friday, March 12, skin check is at 7:20 a.m., followed by weigh-in at 7:30 a.m. Wrestling will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the tournament running straight through its conclusion.
