A pair of U.S. wrestlers won their pool competitions and have advanced to the quarterfinals at the Ivan Yarygin Tournament in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, Feb. 27. Capturing their pools were Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Cael Sanderson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Both were members of the 2003 U.S. World Team, with Abas placing fifth and Sanderson second at the World Championships in New York City. Abas won two matches on Friday, beating Zhasulan Mukhtarbekuly of Kazakhstan, 3-1 and Sukhrab Khiziev of Russia, 9-2. In the quarterfinals on Saturday, he will face Bauutzhan Orazgaliev of Kazakhstan. "Abas is very solid," said U.S. coach Mike Duroe. "He has had a really good par terre defense. He stayed in perfect position. He feels good and is very confident." Sanderson also won a pair of matches, stopping Taimuraz Koziev of Russia, 4-1 and Zhumogosh Mamutov of Kyrgyzstan, 8-4. In the quarterfinals, where he will face Olympic and World champion Adam Saitiev of Russia. It will be the first meeting between the two wrestlers, and has been a highly anticipated showdown within international wrestling for a number of years. "Sanderson has looked fine," said Duroe. "He made a mistake and gave up some points, but he did not get turned at all. He has outscored his opponents on his feet. In fact, he had 10 takedowns in the two matches. He has been real dominant on his feet." Both of the U.S. super heavyweights lost their first match and finished with 2-1 records and did not advance from the pools. At 264.5 pounds, 2000 Olympian and 2003 World silver medalist Kerry McCoy (Bethlehem, Pa./New York AC) was pinned by World champion Kouramagomed Kouramagomedov of Russia in 5:35. McCoy was trailing 2-0 in the match and attempted an inside trip in the final minute, and was brought to his back for the fall. McCoy won his other two matches, a 4-2 decision over Innokenty Zykov of Russia and a 10-0 technical fall over Mansur Mirzaed of Uzbekistan, 10-0. Kouramagomedov swept his pool matches and moved on to the semifinals. Also at 264.5 pounds, Steven Mocco (N. Bergen, N.J./New York AC) finished with a 2-1 record, losing his first match to veteran Oleg Khorpiakov of Russia, 3-2. He then stopped Marid Mutalimov of Kazakhstan, 3-2 and received an injury default over Andrey Svatkovsky of Kazakhstan. Khorpiakov won all of his matches and advanced from the pool. Had McCoy and Mocco won their pools, they would have wrestled each other in the semifinals. As this did not happen, the anticipated first meeting between these two athletes will not happen this weekend. Two U.S. wrestlers went 1-1 in their pools and were eliminated: 2003 World Team member Jamill Kelly (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Andy Hrovat (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Kelly opened up with a 3-0 loss Mackhach Murtazaliev of Russia, then completed his day with a 4-2 win over Paata Nozadze of Russia. Hrovat lost a close match to 2003 World champion Sajid Sajidov of Russia, 8-5. The match was tied at 5-5 in the second period before Sajidov scored the winning points. In his second match, Hrovat pinned Din Khun Tszyun of China, 1:05. Losing both of his matches was 2001 World Team member Bill Zadick (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Zadick lost an 11-1 technical fall to talented Zaur Botiev of Russia, then was pinned by Iosif Momteselidze of Kyrgyzstan. Draws were determined for the U.S. wrestlers in the final three weight classes: 60 kg/132 lbs., 74 kg/163 lbs. and 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Among the athletes competing are 2003 World Team members Eric Guerrero, Stillwater, Okla. (Gator WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
