Erin Tomeo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) claimed a gold medal at 59 kg/130 lbs., the top U.S. performance in the women's division at the Kiev Grand Prix in Kiev, Ukraine, Feb. 20-21. Tomeo won four matches on the way to the gold medal, including a pair of close bouts in the medal rounds. She beat Yuliya Ratkevic, 5-4, in the semifinals and Olga Boutkevich of Ukraine, 5-4 in the gold-medal match. "Erin wrestled extremely well," said U.S. coach Tom Tomeo. "All of our women had to face tough conditions. Erin had to handle some controversial calls. Being able to refocus and win the semifinals and finals in overtime was excellent for her. She was very ready for the challenges." Tomeo is currently ranked No. 1 at this division on Women's Team USA, and is a three-time U.S. Nationals runner-up. Claiming a silver medal was Marcie Van Dusen (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. In the gold-medal finals, she was defeated by World medalist Natalia Golts of Russia, 4-1. "Marcie beat a past World champion, Anna Gomis, in the first round," said Tomeo. "She controlled her matches, and was very aggressive and smart. In the finals, she was in the match with Russia's World medalist Natalia Golts. It went to the clinch. It could have gone either way." The U.S. had a pair of placewinners in the 48 kg/105.5 lbs division. Katie Kunimoto (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) placed fourth and two-time World silver medalist Patricia Miranda (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) placed fifth.
