USA Wrestling Director of State Services Mark Scott (Colorado Springs, Colo.) will receive the Medal of Courage from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame during induction ceremonies in Stillwater, Okla. in June. The Medal of Courage is presented annually to a wrestler or former wrestler who has overcome what appear to be insurmountable challenges, which may be physical, mental or other handicaps that make their achievements all the more uplifting. Mark Scott is passionate about wrestling. He has worked within the sport as one of its top volunteers and then as one of the key executives for USA Wrestling. Scott has served as Director of State Services for USA Wrestling for 15 years. Mark has not only overcome a difficult handicap to be a major success in life, he has had these achievements within the sport of wrestling. Scott was an active and successful wrestler as a youth. He started wrestling as a youth, and competed on the national level in age-group competition. He won a number of state freestyle and Greco-Roman titles, and was a varsity wrestler at his high school. When Mark Scott was a high school junior, he was on the side of the road working on his car. His parked vehicle was hit from behind by an errant car, and Mark was crushed between two cars. Due to the severe injuries, both of his legs were amputated near his knees, and he has been on prostheses since. Mark Scott no longer wrestled, but he did remain active in wrestling. Prior to joining the USA Wrestling staff, Scott was active as a volunteer leader within the sport. He was the USA Wrestling State Chairperson for Wyoming from 1985-88 and was named the USA Wrestling State Chairperson of the Year in 1988. He served as event director at many regional and state events, and was respected for his ability to conduct efficient competitions. He received the 1984 Wyoming Governors award for his contributions to wrestling in Wyoming. He has also been a national-caliber mat official, working as a referee at many national-level competitions. Scott joined the national staff in January 1989, and as Director of State Services, his efforts with USA Wrestling's state, regional and national programs and events have helped the organization to experience impressive growth in recent years. He has been responsible for providing support and services to USA Wrestling's state associations, as well as to local clubs and individual members. For over a year, Scott also served as USA Wrestling's Director of National Events, but has relinquished those duties and is doing State Services activities full-time again. Scott most recently served as Tournament Director for the 2003 World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling in Madison Square Garden in New York City, one of the greatest events in the history of international wrestling. He received the FILA gold star for his achievements within international wrestling. He is also an accomplished wrestling public address announcer. He announces the Wyoming State High School Championships, the NCAA Div. I West Regionals, the Dave Schultz Memorial International, and numerous junior high and high school events. Scott is respected for his work ethic, one of the most dedicated people within wrestling. He is a first-to-come, last-to-leave leader who does not quit until the job is done. Often, when working the long hours at major events, Mark is able to complete his assignments, in spite of his physical challenges.
