From national champions to redshirts, college wrestlers had a busy week Nearly every wrestler in college was busy last weekend, even the kids taking Olympic redshirt years. Cal State-Bakersfield did something it had never accomplished before, while Minnesota stunned Illinois on the road. And oh yeah, Oklahoma State is still the top team in the country. Let's take a look at what happened last week in college wrestling: Putting the "Pain" in Champaign Minnesota, in the middle of a rebuilding season, strolled into Champaign, Ill. on Friday night and stunned Illinois with a 19-16 win. The Gophers wrestled a smart dual meet, staying close in most of the matches they were favored to lose and then posting big wins in the matches they were favored to win. A pin by 174-pound Jon Dumcombe over Pete Freidl gave the Gophers a 12-10 advantage with three matches left. Wins like this are becoming common in Gopher territory. And remember, most of this team's best wrestlers are still redshirting. California Dreamin' Watching Cal State-Bakersfield wrestle like this is giving West Coast fans memories of the teams that Stephen Neal wrestled on. The now two-time Super Bowl champion offensive lineman must be happy with former program after it posted a 24-18 win over Cal State-Fullerton on Friday evening and a 20-17 win over Arizona State on Sunday. Bakersfield finishes the year with a 14-1 record, its best ever. Along with a healthy and resurgent Cal Poly squad, things are starting to look bright in California once again. Plowing the Field The Cowboys of Oklahoma State continued to prove why they are the top team in the country this year with a 25-9 win over Nebraska on Saturday night. Oklahoma State won seven of 10 matches in the dual, though four of those wins were by three points or less. But the close wins is what makes Oklahoma State so tough to beat. The Cowboys seem to find ways to pull out the close matches. After some early-season worries, it appears that Oklahoma State is beginning to peak at the right time again. McKnight Tonight? Buffalo freshman 125-pounder Mark McKnight may be on one of the worst Division I teams in the nation, but that has not stopped him from succeeding this year. McKnight is 26-6 this season, including wins over Kyle Stoffer of Central Michigan, Jermaine Jones of Ohio State and Alejandro Alvarez of Cornell. Stoffer and Alvarez qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year. All six of his losses have come to wrestlers ranked in the top 15 of their respective weight classes, and five of those have come by two points or less. This is a freshman that coaches across the country will need to keep their eyes on. Tracking the Redshirts Of the many wrestlers who are seeking Olympic redshirts this year (the process is not actually approved by the NCAA until the end of the season), most did fairly well at the prestigious Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Saturday and Sunday. In freestyle, Steve Mocco (Iowa) placed first at 264.5 lbs., Mike Faust (Pennsylvania) placed third at 264.5 lbs., Nick Simmons (Michigan State) placed sixth at 121 lbs., Shawn Bunch (Edinboro) placed eighth at 132 lbs., Jason Borrelli (Central Michigan) placed ninth at 132 lbs. and Jon Trenge (Lehigh) placed ninth at 211.5 lbs. In Greco-Roman, Justin Ruiz (Nebraska) placed third at 211.5 lbs., Ken Cook (Iowa State) placed fourth at 185 lbs. and Luke Smith (Central Michigan) placed seventh at 121 lbs., Mark DiSalvo (Central Michigan), Chris Fleeger (Purdue) and Eddie Gifford (Fresno State) did not place in the tournament. This Week Missouri will travel to Iowa State in a Big XII showdown on Friday night. Both teams are trying to get back to their winning ways following late season slumps. Most of the Cyclones woes have been caused by injuries to three starters. It looked like the dual of the year in November, but on Sunday, Oklahoma State will host Lehigh. The Cowboys are hot once again, winning 14 straight duals. Lehigh is on a streak of its own, winning eight in-a-row following a slow start to the season. On Sunday, Minnesota will host Iowa in another "Border Brawl" matchup. While this series has lost some of its luster since neither team is in contention for a national team title, there is still a lot of bad blood between these two programs. Also on Sunday, Ohio State will host Central Michigan.. The Buckeyes have struggled this year and the Chippewas have began to come on with the help of some very good Ohio-born wrestlers.
