Upper Montclair, NJ - Montclair State University head wrestling coach STEVE STRELLNER has announced that he will retire from his position at the close of the 2003-04 campaign, having been involved with MSU Wrestling since 1974. He is in his 25th season as head coach at Montclair State. For the last 30 years, "Strap" has been wrestling, assisting a head coach, or running the whole program. He has wrestled for, wrestled with, has been, or has coached every single All-American that has come through Montclair State. He has seen 53 different Division III All-Americans who have won 92 All-American honors, plus a national-record 28 NCAA Division III individual champions, eight Academic All-Americans, and seven Division I All-Americans, including 1978 Division I national champion Ken Mallory. "I'm proud of all the student-athletes I've coached over the years," said the 53-year-old coach, " They're the ones who are most responsible for all of my success. I do it all of them." Strellner guided MSU to the 1986 NCAA Division III national championship, earning National Coach of the Year status, and then mentored MSU to within five points of the 1989 national crown. A native of South Tama, Iowa, he was inducted into National Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma back in 2001, thirty years after first coming to MSU as a wrestler. He won the 1971 Metropolitan Championship and earned All American status after placing fourth in the Division III National Championships, and three years later made the transition from student-athlete to coach while earning his bachelor's degree from MSU in industrial technology. Strellner helped Montclair State to the 1976 Division III National Championship as an assistant coach, the first-ever national title in school history. He then took over as head coach in 1978-79 and has been there ever since, leading the Red Hawks to a school-record 220 dual-match victories and a dozen Top 10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, plus three Metropolitan Conference crown and two New Jersey Athletic Conference titles. "Steve Strellner has had a long and successful career at Montclair State University as the head wrestling coach," said MSU Director of Athletics Holly Gera. "Our wrestling program has been a perennial national power in Division III under Steve's leadership. He has touched the lives of many young men in his 30 years at the university, and built a program that we are very proud of. We wish Steve much luck in his retirement." A three-time selection as Metropolitan Conference Coach of the Year, Strellner will be honored prior to final home dual match at Panzer Gymnasium on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 7:00 p.m. when his 21st-ranked Red Hawks host No. 13 Springfield (MA) College. All wrestling alumni are invited to attend the match.
