COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) today announced that it will be partnering with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the U.S. State Department and USA Wrestling to host and train Iraqi wrestlers in their pursuit of participating in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Working with USA Wrestling, the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and the IOC's Solidarity Department, the USOC will be coordinating an extended training program for four Iraqi wrestlers and two coaches at the USOC's Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center. The USOC and USA Wrestling will be hosting two freestyle wrestlers and a coach along with two Greco-Roman wrestlers and a coach. "As the newly elected president of the Iraqi Olympic committee, I am deeply grateful that the U.S. State Department and the USOC have generously supported the rebuilding of Iraq athletes," states Ahmed Al Samarrai, chairman of the Iraqi Olympic Committee. "The offer to support the training of an Iraqi team will go a long way towards restarting the competitors of our programs to returning pride to the Iraqi people." The wrestling program will be the second exchange on which the USOC, U.S. State Department and IOC Solidarity have worked together, having supported a similar program last year for the Iraqi archery team that participated in the 42nd World Outdoor Target Archery Championships held in New York City in July. "The United States Olympic Committee is proud to be a part of the collaborative effort with the U.S. Department of State, the International Olympic Committee and USA Wrestling to further the development of sport in Iraq," says USOC Chief of Sport Performance Jim Scherr. "We look forward to welcoming the Iraqi wrestlers to the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center and seeing them pursue their dream of competing at the Athens Games." "USA Wrestling is excited about the opportunity to work with the Iraqi wrestlers and coaches in their efforts to participate in the Athens Olympics," said Rich Bender, USA Wrestling Executive Director. "Wrestling is a worldwide family, and we are proud to assist our fellow wrestlers." The relationship between the USOC and Iraqi sport emanated from a June 2003 meeting in Kuwait City where leaders of the USOC, IOC, U.S. Government and the Olympic Council of Asia met to strategize future support for Iraqi athletes in their attempt to qualify and participate at the Athens Olympic and Paralympic Games.
