The biggest story in sports this weekend is the Super Bowl in Houston. Fans of mixed martial arts are looking forward to a super event of their own this weekend, a major UFC card in Las Vegas on Saturday. UFC 46: Super Natural will be presented LIVE on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. EST, Saturday, January 31, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Two former wrestlers who have become champions within mixed martial arts will be defending their titles during this show: light heavyweight champion Randy Couture and welterweight champion Matt Hughes. Couture, known as "the Natural" within the UFC, fights in the main event against Brazilian phenom Vitor Belfort. Hughes will defend his title for the sixth time, battling BJ Penn in the co-main event. Penn will move up from the lightweight division for the title fight. The wrestling backgrounds of these champions are undeniable and impressive. Couture was one of the nation's top Greco-Roman wrestling stars. He made four U.S. World teams and won four U.S. Nationals titles. Couture was a 1991 Pan American Games champion. He fell short of his goal of competing in the Olympics, but was as high as second in the Olympic Trials. Couture competed for Oklahoma State Univ., earning three All-American honors and placing second in the NCAA Championships twice. He went to OSU after a stint in U.S. Army. Originally from Washington, Couture was a state high school champion. Hughes was a two-time All-American at Eastern Illinois University, after a successful junior college career at Lincoln Junior College. He is a native of Illinois, where he won a state high school title. Both Couture and Hughes have flourished within the UFC, taking their wrestling skills into the octagon and developing other talents that have enabled them to reach to top of their profession. Couture is the only person in UFC history to win titles in two different weight classes, also winning the heavyweight belt in the past. Even at 40 years old, Couture shows a dominant mix of talent, power and strategy to retain the edge. His career record in mixed martial arts is 12-5. His opponent Belfort is from Brazil, and is a master of jiu jitsu. Belfort's career mark is 11-3. One of his losses was to Couture, in a battle six years ago that Couture won by technical knockout. Hughes may be the most dominant champion in any of the UFC weight divisions. He is coming off a big victory over another former wrestling star, Frank Trigg, winning the bout quickly with a rear naked choke in the first round at UFC 45: Revolution. Hughes likes to throw his opponents hard to the mat, and is also dangerous when he goes for the "ground and pound attack." Hughes has a 30-3 record in a variety of mixed martial arts competitions. Penn, who hails from Hawaii, comes in with a 6-1-1 record. His strengths are equally impressive from striking positions and on the ground. Both Couture and Hughes are always asked about their wrestling backgrounds when traveling the nation with the mixed martial arts world. In a recent interview with Boxinginsider.com, Couture said: "I will always be a wrestler with my background. I spent 30 years wrestling, and I think the biggest part of my game is wrestling. That background allows me to do everything else. Because I am a wrestler, I can take the fight to the ground or keep the fight on my feet and take advantage of the [striking] skills that I have learned. I just want people to think of me as a well rounded fighter, and someone who goes out and works hard to get the job done." When asked about the difference between UFC fighting and wrestling, Hughes says, "In some ways it's so similar and in some ways it's the complete opposite. It depends on what you're doing." So many fans are interested in seeing if 40-year-old Couture can continue to dominate this demanding and punishing game. When asked about the fight against Couture, Belfort is realistic: "I don't know, man. This is a very unpredictable fight. Anything can happen." UFC legend Ken Shamrock was recently interviewed about Couture's chances by Boxinginsider.com. "It will be interesting to see if Randy can take Vitor down. Randy was able to get the takedown against Tito and Chuck Liddell, but he's facing a much, much stronger fighter in Vitor. If Vitor comes out with his 'A-game,' it could be a long night for Randy. If Randy really commits to shooting, which he has in the past, takes Vitor down and doing grounds-and-pounds, I think he will win the fight," said Shamrock. Sports fans have an entertaining option to enjoy the UFC card on Saturday night before the Super Bowl. Many are choosing to see these mixed-martial arts warriors in action, rather than hours of football preview shows. Those lucky enough to be in Las Vegas will have a tremendous time watching the action, as well as the fun atmosphere that these shows provide. Live event tickets, $350, $250, $150, $75 and $35, are now on sale at the Mandalay Bay Events Center box office in Las Vegas, at all Ticketmaster locations, www.ticketmaster.com and www.mandalaybay.com.
