In June 2003, World Sports Alliance, the Official International Exchange Coordinator of USA Wrestling, hosted an international high school dual meet competition and clinic at the University of Dubuque in Iowa. Because of the success of the event and positive feedback from the high school coaches, World Sports Alliance has decided to make it an annual event. In order to further entice foreign teams to attend and to provide this opportunity to more US teams, a second location for this event has been added in 2004. The two International High School Team Dual Meet Competitions will be held on back to back weekends in June. The 2004 event dates are June 11-13 in Blue Springs, Mo. and June 18-20 in Dubuque, Iowa. Last year, the event was created in response to a drop in the number of USA Wrestling teams wishing to travel abroad in 2003. "World events such as the war in Iraq and the SARS epidemic in Asia caused many teams to stay home," explained Jon McGovern, the Event Director and Head Coach at the University of Dubuque. "Teams from Poland, Turkey and Albania attended the event in Dubuque as well as many U.S .teams." At the 2003 event, most athletes received about 15 matches over three days. The format provided that when two US teams competed against each othe,r they wrestled using folk-style rules and when a foreign team was involved the matches switched to either freestyle or Greco Roman rules. This format was well received by the coaches in attendance. Their athletes received a season's worth of folk-style matches in one weekend and at the same were able to gain experience in the Olympic styles against foreign competition. "It's always tough to get foreign teams to come over, especially on the Junior level; that's why we added the second event," said Wade Genova, President of World Sports Alliance. "We wanted to give them more value for their money. In doing so, we are also providing this opportunity to a greater number of U.S. wrestlers". Each event will be limited to the first 20 teams to register and both locations are expected to fill up quickly. Individual athletes and partial teams are also encouraged to attend. They will be combined to form additional teams. If you are interested in participating in either of this year's events, you can reach World Sports Alliance at (719)265-6005.
