Many Top American wrestlers expected at Manitoba Open in Winnipeg, Canada, January 30-31

The 6th Annual FILA Manitoba Open will take place on January 30-31, at University of Manitoba in the Investors' Group Athletic Centre, in Winnipeg Canada.     There is expected to be a large contingent of U.S. athletes going to this event. This is a great opportunity to get challenging international competition in preparation for the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials - Wrestling in May.    According to event director, Nat Brigante, expected men's teams include: the United States, Canada, Australia, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Mexico, Mongolia, Poland, and Sweden. The women's field will include the United States, Mexico, Canada, Mongolia, and Australia.      For the United States, many top U.S. women are expected to wrestle. Included are four of the seven 2003 World Team members. World gold medalist Kristie Marano (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) at 63 kg/138.5 lbs., World silver medalists Patricia Miranda (Colorado Springs, Colo/DSWC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Sara McMann (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 63 kg/138.5 lbs. and  World bronze medalist Jenny Wong (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 51 kg/112 lbs. will attend.     Other top women expected to compete in Manitoba include; 2003 U.S. National Champion Malinda Ripley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., and 2003 U.S. National champion Tela O'Donnell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 55kg/121 lbs.      Women's National Team members looking to participate include Tori Adams (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 63 kg/138.5 lbs., Samantha Lang (Tualatin, Ore./ unattached) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs., Katie Kunimoto (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 51 kg/112 lbs., Marcie VanDusen (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Erin Tomeo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 59 kg/130 lbs., and Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.     Many of the top men freestyle wrestlers in the USA, representing their club programs, traditionally attend this event. A larger group is expected because of the preparations for the Olympic Trials.     Among those expected to attend are 2003 World silver medalists Cael Sanderson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids), at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Kerry McCoy (Bethlehem, Pa./New York AC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Both are ranked No. 1 in their weight class. McCoy was a 2000 Olympian. Sanderson was the first four-time undefeated NCAA Div. I champion.     Teague Moore (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC), at 55 kg/121 lbs., a 2002 U.S. Nationals champion, is also expected to attend.     All seven weight classes in both men's and women's freestyle divisions will be used.     Competition will begin on Friday, January 30th, starting at 1:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. with competition resuming on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. till 12:00 p.m. Finals will begin at 12:30 till 2:30 on Saturday, January 31st.
