STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State's Board of Trustees today approved the appointment of an architect to design an addition to the Rec Hall Wrestling facilities and a new Student Fitness Center at the University Park campus. The firm of L. Robert Kimball & Associates of State College will plan the renovation and expansion of the Rec Hall practice facilities, locker rooms and support space for the wrestling team, as well as the addition of new space and features to enhance student fitness. The goal of the new plan for Rec Hall is to renovate 24,000-square feet of existing space, mostly located on the first floor of the south end of the building, to create a wrestling team complex. An additional 16,000-square feet of space is to be created by new construction to build a public recreation and fitness area off the west side of the south end of the building where Lot Red H is now located. A target date of Fall 2005 has been set for completion of the project. The plan will double the size of the current wrestling practice facilities using existing space. Renovation of the current wrestling locker room and team areas, cosmetic improvements of many of the public hallways, addition of an aerobic exercise room where the current basket storage area now exists and the addition of the new public recreation area are also benefits. The new construction will put a modern and inviting face on the building. "An effort and emphasis has been placed on making the view from Atherton Street to the building exciting and showing activity," Associate Athletic Director Herb Schmidt, who is overseeing the project, said. "We are looking to open the west end of campus to Atherton and make it inviting instead of showing the backs of buildings." Wrestling boasts a 96-year history of intercollegiate competition at Penn State. Rec Hall contains two gymnasiums, weight rooms, racquetball courts, an indoor track, a wrestling room and locker rooms. The outdated facilities addressed by this project have not been expanded or renovated since 1964, during which time the University Park campus enrollment has more than doubled. The Nittany Lion wrestlers, coached by Troy Sunderland, are ranked sixth nationally and host No. 3 Illinois tonight at 7:00 in Rec Hall for a highly anticipated Big Ten showdown. Penn State has a 7-2 dual meet record and placed fourth at last weekend's National Team Duals, its highest finish in six years.
