With only two men's freestyle weight classes left to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, the United States will send some of its best wrestlers overseas to two Olympic qualifying tournaments in February. The first Olympic qualifying event will be held in Bratislava, Slovakia, Feb. 1-2. The second Olympic qualifying event will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria, Feb. 14-15. Wrestlers who qualify their respective weight classes at the first qualifying tournament will not participate in the second qualifying tournament. Only nations that have not yet qualified at each weight class may enter these Olympic qualifiers. In order to qualify the weight class for the 2004 Olympic Games, wrestlers must place in the top five at their respective weight class at the first Olympic qualifying tournament. In the second Olympic qualifying tournament, wrestlers must place in the top four at their respective weight classes. Wrestlers qualifying for the Olympic Games only qualify their weight class for their nation. Olympic Team athlete selection varies by country. Positions on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Teams will be determined at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Wrestling in Indianapolis, Ind., May 21-23. Competing at the first men's freestyle Olympic qualifier for the United States will be Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Joe Williams (Iowa City, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Bono was a member of the 2001-02 U.S. World Teams. He placed second at the 2003 U.S. World Team Trials and the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Bono has competed in numerous international events. He captured a gold medal at the 2003 World Cup and has won bronze medals at the 1997 and 2002 Pan American Championships. He was a 1996 NCAA champion at Iowa State Univ. Williams won a bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships. He has been a member of four U.S. World Teams (1999, 2001-03) and has won four World Cup gold medals (2000-03). He also captured gold at the 1999 and 2003 Pan American Games. Williams has won four U.S. Nationals titles (1999, 2001-03). He was a three-time NCAA champion (1996-98) at the Univ. of Iowa. If Bono does not qualify the weight class in Slovakia, 2003 U.S. World Team member Jamill Kelly (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) will compete at the second Olympic qualifying event in Sofia, Bulgaria, according the USA Wrestling National Freestyle Coach Kevin Jackson. Kelly won a silver medal at the 2003 Pan American Games. He had his greatest event ever at the 2003 U.S. World Team Trials, defeating a loaded field of stars to claim the title. Also traveling with the U.S. team as an injury replacement is Ramico Blackmon (Colorado Springs, Colo./Team Excel) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Blackmon will wrestle only if Williams is unable to due to injury. Blackmon won a U.S. Nationals title in 2001 and placed third at the U.S. World Team Trials that same year. He recently won the Sunkist Kids International Open. Coaching the U.S. wrestlers will be USA Wrestling National Freestyle Coach Kevin Jackson (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Jackson is considered as one of the greatest freestyle wrestlers in U.S. history. He won a gold medal at the 1992 Olympic Games and gold medals at the 1991 and 1995 World Championships. Last year, he guided the U.S. men's freestyle team to a second-place finish at the World Championships. The Olympic qualifying tournaments are phases two and three of the Olympic qualification process. Phase one was the World Championships. In men's freestyle, the United States qualified five out of seven weight classes for the 2004 Olympic Games, which is achieved by placing in the top 10 at each weight class. It was possible to place 11th at the World Championships and still qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games. Host-country Greece has automatically qualified all weight classes. If a wrestler from Greece placed in the top 10 at his or her respective weight class, then the 11th-place wrestler qualified his or her country for the 2004 Olympic Games as well. There will be Olympic qualifying events for Greco-Roman and women's freestyle as well. The United States has already qualified at all four women's weights. The United States must still qualify at four weight classes in Greco-Roman. Information on the U.S. teams for the Greco-Roman qualifier will be provided shortly.
