Skretkowicz named CAA Wrestler of the Week; Manarte named CAA Rookie of the Week

b>HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Hofstra University junior Chris Skretkowicz received Colonial Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week honors, and Pride freshman John Manarte shared CAA Rookie of the Week wrestling honors with John DaCruz of Boston University for all competition from January 12th through the 18th. Skretkowicz, a junior from Hamburg, N.J. (Wallkill Valley Regional), was a perfect 6-0 last weekend at the 2004 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, posting two pins and four shutouts. Skretkowicz is currently ranked second in the nation among 197 pounders by Amateur Wrestling News, and fifth by InterMat. Skretkowicz pinned No. 12 Joe Yager of Central Michigan and beat No. 19 Jeff Foust of Missouri 8-0, extending his winning streak to 10 bouts, and is now 10-1 in duals, 24-2 overall. Manarte, a freshman from Farmingville, N.Y. (Sachem High), won three bouts at the National Duals, including an upset over 18th-ranked Clark Forward of Michigan. His only losses were to ranked opponents, including a 4-1 decision to the top-ranked 141-pounder in the nation, Teyon Ware of Oklahoma. Manarte also defeated wrestlers from Penn and Cornell, improving to 16-12 on the season. DaCruz, a freshman from Ludlow, Mass. (Ludlow High), won all three of his bouts by fall last week, including a pin of nationally ranked-Nick Ciarcia of Brown, and CAA foe Max Pazdan of Sacred Heart. DaCruz improves to 10-5.
