Cleveland, Ohio - Oklahoma State successfully defended its NWCA National Duals team title on Sunday afternoon with a 24-12 victory over Big XII Conference rival Missouri. The Cowboys (12-1) won seven of the first eight matches in the dual meet, cruising to the victory. Missouri (10-1) defeated Oklahoma State on Nov. 21 by a 21-17 score, snapping the Cowboys' 29-match winning streak. In the dual earlier this season, the Cowboys were without defending NCAA champion Jake Rosholt (184 lbs.) and also had one different starter at 157 lbs. For this dual, Rosholt was back and freshman phenom Johnny Hendricks was in the lineup at 157. Not only did the Cowboys get revenge as a team, but so did 125-pound Cody Stites, who got Oklahoma State rolling with a 4-3 win over Austen DeVoe. Stites was able to gain the victory thanks to a riding time point, which he earned with a third period rideout over DeVoe. Two-time defending NCAA champion Johnny Thompson of Oklahoma State got back on track against 2002 Junior College national champion Paul Collum with a 3-1 win. Thompson scored a takedown in the second period on a low double-leg, giving enough points to hold on and win the match. Thompson had lost two of his first three matches of the tournament before his win over Collum. Missouri received some hope after J.P. Reese defeated Ronnie Delk 4-0 at 141 lbs., but that would be the last individual win for the Tigers until the 197-pound weight class. Wins by Zack Esposito (149) and Hendricks (157) put the Cowboys in the drivers seat, and a pin by Rosholt at 184 lbs. sealed the win. Esposito defeated Jeremy Spates 4-3 after holding a riding time advantage at the end of the match. Hendricks continued to improve throughout the tournament, defeating another quality opponent. This time, he downed Kenny Burleson 3-1. Hendricks scored on an explosive double-leg in the first period, and was able to stop Burleson from creating any offensive chances in the win. Hendricks defeated defending NCAA champion Ryan Bertin of Michigan in the semifinals. Rosholt pinned freshman Matt Pell with 45 seconds remaining in the match to give Oklahoma State an insurmountable 24-3 lead. Missouri's Jeff Foust (197) and Mike Whitehead (285) won the final two matches of the dual meet. "The team took the loss pretty hard," Missouri head coach Brian Smith said. "What we need to remember is that it's only January, and there's lots of time left in the season. Besides, second place is the highest we've ever finished at the National Duals." All-Americans Tyrone Lewis (165) and Chris Pendleton (174) also added wins for Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State will next host Northern Iowa on Friday, Jan. 30. Missouri will travel to Nebraska on Saturday, Jan. 24. Michigan placed third in the tournament, defeating Penn State 21-17. Oklahoma downed Hofstra 28-15 for fifth place and Minnesota defeated Pennsylvania 22-15 for seventh place. DIVISION II North Dakota State head coach Bucky Maughan, a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, earned his 400th career victory the hard way - by criteria. The Bison defeated defending NCAA Division II national champion Central Oklahoma on a criteria of most nearfall points after the two teams wrestled to a 15-15 split. Kevin Lochner of Central Oklahoma kept his team in the dual meet with a major upset over 2003 NCAA Division II runner-up Brian Kraemer at 197 lbs. That win offset the earlier upset by North Dakota State's Zach Stevens over All-American Jerrod Goodwin at 149 lbs. Bison heavyweight Joe Bryce gave his team the win with a 4-2 decision over Chris Finn in the final match, sending the scorekeepers to the criteria chart. Overall, the dual featured two defending NCAA Division II national champions and four other 2003 All-Americans. 157-pound Travis Koppenhafer of Adams State was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. DIVISION III In a rematch of the 2003 NWCA Division III National Duals finals, defending national champion Wartburg topped Augsburg 20-17. Last year, Wartburg defeated Augsburg 19-13. All four wrestlers were 2003 NCAA Division III All-Americans. Kelly was a national champion.
