U.S. Greco-Roman Winter Tour season begins on Jan. 31 with two overseas competitions

The U.S. Greco-Roman Winter Tour season will begin on Jan. 31 with two tournaments, the Ivan Poddoubny Tournament in Moscow, Russia and the Petrov Tournament in Sofia Bulgaria. The third and final event in the U.S. Greco-Roman Winter Tour will be the Poland Open in Raciborz, Poland, March 13-14.    At least 10 U.S. athletes are slated to compete at each event. These events allow elite Greco-Roman athletes to gain valuable international experience.    2002 World Champion Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) will lead the charge at the Ivan Poddoubny Tournament in Moscow, Russia, Jan. 31-Feb. 1. Byers will compete at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. He will be joined by Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs., who placed fifth at the 2002 and 2003 World Championships.    Four-time U.S. World Team member Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) will compete at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.    Also expected to wrestle is Justin Ruiz (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Ruiz, who is taking an Olympic Redshirt year, won a silver medal at the 2003 Pan American Games and competed at the 2003 World Championships.    Two former U.S. Nationals champions will also be on the U.S. squad. Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), who won national titles in 1999 and 2002 will compete at 60 kg/132 lbs., and Marcel Cooper (Stafford, Va./U.S. Army), who won a national title and competed at the World Championships in 2001, will wrestle at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.    Also competing are U.S. National Team members Lindsey Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Darryl Christian (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs., Jake Clark (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Marine Corps) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Dan Hicks (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Hicks has been a member of the U.S. National Team four times.    Also on the U.S. roster is Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Warren has placed in the top six at the U.S. World Team Trials five times.    The team will be coached by Jay Antonelli (Quantico, Va.) and Shawn Sheldon (Colorado Springs, Colo.).     Antonelli is currently the head coach of the U.S. Marine Corps team. He has been a member of three U.S. World Team coaching staffs and the 2000 U.S. Greco-Roman Olympic Team coaching staff. Sheldon competed at two Olympic Games, placing fourth in 1992. He has served as a coach for numerous U.S. teams in international competition.    1996 Olympic silver medalist and 1995 World Champion Dennis Hall (Plover, Wis./Sunkist Kids) will lead the U.S. squad at the Petrov Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaira, Jan. 31-Feb. 1. Hall, a 10-time U.S. Nationals champion, will compete at 60 kg/132 lbs.    2001 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team member Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) will be joined by his brother Aaron Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at the same weight class - 84 kg/185 lbs. Keith is a three-time U.S. Nationals champion and Aaron has won medals in many international events.    Also on the U.S. roster are 2003-04 U.S. National Team members Anthony Gibbons (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Frank Workman (Spotsylvania, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and Paul Devlin (Cascade, Colo./U.S. Army) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.    Two up-and-coming young wrestlers are also competing at the Petrov Tournament - Mark Rial (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Brandon McNab (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs.    Rial recently placed second in the Sunkist Kids International Open and has shown signs of improvement since becoming a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. McNab won the 2002 Sunkist Kids International Open, springboarding him to success at many international events in the last year.    The U.S. Air Force team will send three wrestlers to the Petrov Tournament - Jacob Hey (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Steve Woods (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Phil Johnston (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. All three wrestlers have had successes at past international tournaments.    The U.S. team will be coached by Rich Estrella (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Shon Lewis (Colorado Springs, Colo.).    Estrella serves as the head coach of the U.S. Air Force team. He was a member of the 1996 U.S. Greco-Roman Olympic Team coaching staff and has served as a U.S. coach for many other international competitions. Lewis is a 2004 U.S. Greco-Roman Olympic Team coach. He also served on the coaching staff for the 2002 and 2003 U.S. Greco-Roman World Teams. Lewis competed in the 1993 and 1999 World Championships.    The United States last competed in the Petrov Tournament in 2002, capturing three silver medals. Winning silvers were Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Mike Ellsworth (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Byers at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.    Durlacher, Christian and Vering will be joined at the Poland Open in Raciborz, Poland, March 13-14 by 2000 Olympic gold medalist and 2001 World Champion Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.    Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) expects to make his return to the mat at the Poland Open, competing at 60 kg/132 lbs. Gruenwald severely injured his shoulder in the semifinals of the 2003 World Championships and was forced to default out of the tournament, placing fourth.    Also competing at the Poland Open will be two-time U.S. World Team member T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and 2002 U.S. Nationals champion Ethan Bosch (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs.    Two-time U.S. National Team member James Shillow (Stafford, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) will compete at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.    Completing the U.S. squad for the Poland Open will be Ron Muir (Colorado Springs, Colo./Unattached) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Cory Posey (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Both wrestlers have placed in many international tournaments.    The U.S. team will be coached by Dale Oliver (Stanley, N.Y.) and Dan Russell (Gresham, Ore.). Oliver was a member of the 1995 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team. Russell is a past Team USA member and coached a recent U.S. Team tour to Iran.    Some athletes attending the 2004 U.S. Greco-Roman Winter Tour are financially supported by their sponsoring club team.
