USA Wrestling's popular Ultimate Challenge Series of folkstyle wrestling continued its success over the holiday season with strong participation at events in both Minnesota and Texas. Minnesota/USA Wrestling, the University of Minnesota Wrestling Program and WWE superstar Brock Lesnar worked cooperatively in showcasing some of the best young folkstyle talent at the 1st Annual Brock Lesnar Gopher Kids Classic in Rochester, Minnesota on Sunday, December 21. The event drew competitors from 15 states including Florida, Colorado and Texas. Along with great competition, participants and fans were treated to an autograph session with Lesnar and a championship round highlighted with live video feed, music, smoke and special lighting. In addition to signing autographs, the former NCAA Champion and current WWE Heavyweight Champion greeted finalist prior to their championship bouts. Not to be outdone, the great state of Texas provided wrestlers from throughout the country with two days of great wrestling at the 19th annual Brute Bowl Classic (formerly the Cotton Bowl Classic). Wrestlers from 22 states converged in Dallas, Texas on December 27-28 to test their mettle against the best young folkstyle talent in America. Participants were not disappointed as nearly 900 wrestlers competed with athletes traveling from as far away as New York, Michigan and Florida. The 28th Annual United States Junior Open Championships, in its first year as a leg of the Ultimate Challenge Series, kicked off the New Year in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on January 9-10, 2004. The event had over 900 wrestlers pre-registered. Updated results will be posted when available. The Junior Open Championships will be followed by the Liberty Nationals in Kansas City, Missouri on February, 14; Wrestle-FEST 2004 in Norfolk, Virginia on March 12-14 (the only East Coast Ultimate Challenge Series event) and conclude with the USA Wrestling National Folkstyle Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa on April 2-4. With three events down and four to go, there are still valuable points to be gained in the quest for the Ultimate Challenge Series prestigious Dominator Belt. With much earned success, three individuals have made their way to all of the events and lead the chase for the belts. Currently, Jack Hathaway (Division I), Dylan Carew (Division II) and Grant Gambrall (Division III), all of Iowa, have the most points in their divisions after the first three competitions.
