Dover, DE --- Delaware State University Director of Athletics Dr. Hallie Gregory has announced that Darren Archangelo has been appointed as the new head wrestling coach of the Hornets. Archangelo, a former Hornet wrestler, replaces Wayne Newsome, who resigned from the DSU post last fall. Archangelo, 33, compiled an overall record of 20-5 and finished second in the 126-pound competition at Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships as a Delaware State wrestler under Newsome during the 1989-90 season. After transferring to York College of Pennsylvania, Archangelo was a NCAA Division III All-America after finishing second in the 134-pound division in the 1993 nationals. He posted an overall record of 23-3 during the 1992-93 season. From 1997 to 2001, Archangelo was head wrestling coach at Caravel Academy in Bear, Del., and served as a volunteer coach for Delaware Special Olympics from 1995 to 2002. He worked as a wrestling official in Delaware from 2001 to 2003. Archangelo returned to Delaware State to earn a bachelor's in Physical Education in 1996. He is employed full-time as a teacher at H.B. duPont Middle School in Hockessin, Del. "We are pleased to welcome Darren to our staff," Gregory said. "He has a solid wrestling background and is well-connected in the Delaware wrestling community. I look forward to working with him to bring our wrestling program to an exciting new level."
