USA Wrestling has re-signed ASICS as its official National Team equipment sponsor, announced USA Wrestling acting Executive Director Rich Bender. USA Wrestling is the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the United States.    ASICS, a long-time sponsor of USA Wrestling, has agreed to continue its National Team equipment sponsorship for four more years, through the 2004 year in Athens, Greece.    ASICS has been a major supporter of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. Asics is also the title sponsor of the ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Championships, the largest youth wrestling tournament in the world. Asics also sponsors the annual ASICS Tiger High School Wrestling All-American Team, recognizing the best young athletes in the nation each year.    The deal, which includes cash, product and service, nets USA Wrestling close to $500,000 in value during the four-year period.    The agreement calls for all USA Wrestling National Teams in competition over the next four years to wear ASICS apparel. Those athletes not under contract with a competitor will also wear ASICS wrestling shoes. More than 70 percent of the top wrestlers in each weight category on the National Team wore ASICS wrestling shoes last year.    The deal also provides for steep discounts by ASICS to provide USA Wrestling and its merchandise division to sell products as a distributor. The program could net USA Wrestling an additional estimated $100,000 or more per year. "ASICS has proven its commitment to USA Wrestling and the sport at all levels," said Bender. "We are looking forward to working with ASICS again for the next four years. This partnership provides our athletes and team with the support needed for success. ASICS has truly been a key player in the success of the entire national wrestling program." Wrestling is one of the most successful sports programs within the U.S. Olympic effort.  The U.S. wrestling team captured seven medals, including two gold medals during the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Since the modern Olympic Games began, the United States has captured 116 Olympic medals and 151 World Championship medals. The U.S. has excelled in all three styles of international wrestling - men*s freestyle, men*s Greco-Roman and women's freestyle.
