They are two of the top super heavyweights in the world. They are two of the six gold medalists in U.S. Greco-Roman history. They also happen to be competing for the same spot on the 2004 U.S. Greco-Roman Olympic Team. They are Rulon Gardner and Dremiel Byers. And both will compete at the 2003 New York Athletic Club Christmas International in New York, N.Y., Dec. 20-21. "I'm looking forward to (a rematch with Gardner)," stated Byers, who won a World gold medal in 2002. "I just want to get competition in, period. Last year, I sat there from the Trials until the World Cup with no competitions. I need to get more matches in." Gardner and Byers last met at the 2002 U.S. World Team Trials-Wrestling in Indianapolis, Ind. The two brutes battled in three intense matches, with Gardner winning the third match to secure a spot on the 2003 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team. The win was a major accomplishment for Gardner, a 2000 Olympic champion and 2001 World gold medalist. Just over a year prior to the Trials, he had been involved in a snowmobiling accident in Wyoming. Gardner was trapped overnight in freezing temperatures before being rescued the next morning. He lost one toe to amputation and suffered severe frostbite on both of his feet. Most people asked if Gardner would even attempt to make a comeback to amateur wrestling. Gardner only asked when. Following the Trials in June, Gardner placed 10th at the 2003 World Championships, losing only to the eventual champion: Khassan Baroev of Russia. The placement was good enough to qualify the weight class for the U.S. in the 2004 Olympic Games, but it wasn't good enough for Gardner. He feels that more competition this season is the only way to get better at this point. "I had already decided back at Sunkist that I was going to try to go to the NYAC tournament. It's a tournament I have never been to. I need to focus all my energy on preparing to win," Gardner said. "Right now, I'm trying to gauge myself to see if I have gotten better since the Worlds. The only way to judge that is through competition." But wrestling at the New York Athletic Club Christmas International also means a possible meeting with Byers, who pushed Gardner to his limits last year. "I don't know if I am looking forward to (a rematch). It's a real match when you wrestle him. You have to give a full 100 percent and it's a really grueling match," Gardner stated. Since 2001, Gardner and Byers have wrestled five times. In the 2001 U.S. World Team Trials best-of-three finals, Gardner defeated Byers in two matches - both in overtime. Last year, Gardner won two and lost one match to Byers in the best-of-three Trials finals. Both of Gardner's wins were in overtime. Needless to say, it is a matchup that Byers is looking forward to again. "I would go to this tournament regardless as to whether Rulon was going or not, but a matchup with him is something that would be good for both of us," Byers said. "He pushes me hard, and right now, those are the kind of matches that I need." For wrestling fans, a Gardner-Byers matchup is the Ali-Frazier of their sport. These are two of the greatest Greco-Roman super heavyweights to ever step on a mat in the U.S. Another meeting at the New York Athletic Club Christmas International may be a prelude to the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Wrestling finals, which is something wrestling fans won't want to miss.
