Sunkist Kids Youth Invitational Tournament to feature top young wrestlers in Chandler, Ariz., Jan. 3

The Sunkist Kids, one of the most popular and successful wrestling clubs in the world, will host the 3rd Annual Sunkist Kids Youth Invitational Tournament at Chandler High School in Chandler, Ariz., Jan. 3.    The tournament features folkstyle wrestling, and will have six age divisions: Bantam, Midget, Novice, Schoolboy/girl, Cadet and Junior.    The competition is an opportunity for the Sunkist Kids to give back to the wrestling community and provide a tremendous competition to talented young athletes. The goal of the tournament is to promote wrestling among youth and create well-disciplined athletes who will become the champions of tomorrow.    In addition to top athletes from Arizona, the organizers are expecting many athletes from neighboring states such as California, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Colorado. In addition, a club of Cadet wrestlers from Canada have indicated that they will attend. The Sunkist Kids are inviting wrestlers from across the nation to enjoy the holiday season in sunny Arizona, and participate in this quality competition.    Prior to the competition, a FREE Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club clinic will be held for all tournament participants and coaches from 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Already confirmed for the free clinic as clinicians are Thom Ortiz, the head wrestling coach at Arizona State Univ., and Joe Romero, the Director of Youth Programs for the Sunkist Kids.    The host hotel is the Sheraton San Marcos Resort, which is located across the street from Chandler High School. The special rate is just $85 per night (for up to four per room). The deadline for reserving rooms at this rate is Friday, December 19. Coaches and families are reminded to order your rooms right away!!!    The Sunkist Kids are celebrating its 27th year of serving the wrestling community (1976-2003), and has developed numerous World and Olympic medallists in all three international wrestling styles (men's freestyle, men's Greco-Roman and women's freestyle).    The competition is sanctioned by USA Wrestling, and all participants must be current USA Wrestling members. Membership cards will be available at the venue.     The tournament fee is $15 per weight class/division entered. Clubs or special groups with 10 or more participants will have the fee reduced to $10 per athletes. Awards are given to the top six athletes in each weight class. Coaches must have a USA Wrestling coaches card to coach in this event.     Cadets and Juniors must wrestle unattached. School uniforms and equipment are not permitted, and school vehicles are not permitted for transportation.     Registration for the Bantam, Midget, Novice and Schoolboy/girl divisions is at 7:30 a.m.. with weigh-ins from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Wrestling for these divisions begin at 10:30 a.m.    Registration for the Cadet and Junior divisions is at 11:00 a.m., with weigh-ins from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Wrestling for these divisions begin at 1:00 p.m.    There will be a separation of genders for male and female participants across all divisions.
