USA Wrestling and the Indiana Sports Corporation have initiated the media accreditation process for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling at RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Ind., May 21-23. A media accreditation form is now available to all journalists to apply for credentials to the competition. The first acceptances will begin to be mailed on February 2 and accreditation requests will be approved on an on-going basis from that time forward. The deadline for all media applications is Monday, May 3, 2004. In addition to the media accreditation form, there is also a hotel information sheet provided for journalists. PDF files of both of these documents are being sent to media, or are available on the internet at two locations: www.trials2004.com as well as at www.usawrestling.org (in the pressroom). Indiana Sports Corporation has arranged special hotel rates and room blocks for the event in downtown. Media should contact the Wrestling Housing Bureau at 1-800-556-INDY (4639), housing@indianapolis.org or visit www.trials2004.com on the Internet to reserve hotel rooms and take advantage of these special rates. Rooms and rates are available on a first-come, first-served basis until the block is full or until April 15, 2004, whichever comes sooner. Journalists should note that fans also have access to these hotels, so they are encouraged to reserve rooms early. One of the largest and most important of the Olympic Team Trials events, a total of 18 berths on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team will be up for grabs at this exciting competition. Large crowds of fans are expected to attend this event, which has grown in size and influence each Olympic cycle. For the first time, women's wrestling will be contested at the Olympic Games in four weight divisions. This will be the historic first U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling to feature women's wrestling. In addition, seven weight classes in men's freestyle and seven weight classes in men's Greco-Roman wrestling will be held. The winners of each weight class qualify to compete in the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. The United States is one of the world's top wrestling powers in all three international styles, and the champions from the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling are expected to be serious medal contenders at the Olympic Games. Athletes expected to compete in Indianapolis include Olympic champion Rulon Gardner; World champions Dremiel Byers, Kristie Marano and Melvin Douglas; Olympic medalists Brandon Paulson and Garrett Lowney; World medalists Cael Sanderson, Tina George, Patricia Miranda, Kerry McCoy, Sara McMann, Joe Williams, Toccara Montgomery, Jenny Wong and Sally Roberts and many other top wrestlers. USA Wrestling will conduct an Olympic Trials qualification process, which will determine the athletes in the field for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling. The major qualifier for the event is the 2004 U.S. National Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., April 9-10. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials competition in Indianapolis features a two-day challenge tournament and a championship finals series. The challenge tournament in all three styles will take place Friday, May 21, and Saturday, May 22. This will include all of the competitors except the 2004 national champions who will advance to the finals. Sunday, May 23, will be the championship finals in each weight class, featuring the national champion against the challenge tournament winner in a best-of-three series. The winner of this series makes the U.S. Olympic Team.
