Big 12 Conference Announces November Wrestler of the Month

DALLAS - Iowa State redshirt freshman Travis Paulson was named the Big 12 Conference's November Wrestler of the Month, the league announced Tuesday. The conference selects a wrestler of the month in November and December but will award an honor weekly starting in January through March. Paulson currently owns a perfect 9-0 record in the 157-pound division and national ranking of fifth by InterMat and Amateur Wrestling News. The Council Bluffs, Iowa, native has tallied victories over nationally ranked opponents Derek Zinck of Lehigh (6-1; Nov. 14), Nick Baima of Northern Iowa (7-5; Nov. 23), Joe Johnston of Iowa (9-4; Nov. 23) and Jake Yost of Tennessee at Chattanooga (5-2; Nov. 29). The highlight of Paulson's season thus far came when he was named the Kaufman-Brand Open's Outstanding Wrestler Nov. 23 in Omaha, Neb. Paulson recorded two wins over ranked opponents and four overall, including a 9-4 decision over Iowa's then-ninth-ranked Joe Johnston in the championship match, to claim the title in his weight class. Paulson has led the fourth-ranked Cyclones' to a 6-0 start this season. ISU has defeated UT at Chattanooga (27-9; Nov. 29), Virginia Tech (30-12; Nov. 29), Carson-Newman (42-6; Nov. 29), then-No. 3 Lehigh (23-18; Nov. 14), Minnesota State-Mankato (39-7; Nov. 7) and Boston (22-14; Nov. 7).
