After graduating from Hofstra in 1952, Lent served as a Lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve during the Korean War. In 1957, he graduated from the Cornell University Law School, was admitted to the New York State Bar Association, and started a practice in Lynbrook, New York before launching his political career. In 1962, Lent was elected to the New York State Senate and was reelected to four additional terms serving until 1970. That year, Lent challenged and defeated U.S. Representative Allard Lowenstein in a race that drew national attention to win a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He would be elected to 11 Congresses through 1992, earning a reputation as a hard-working and effective legislator. He was endorsed several times by Newsday, whose editors called him a "key player in environmental and energy legislation." Lent was not a candidate for reelection to the 103rd Congress in 1993 and voluntarily retired from public service having won all 16 general elections in which he was a candidate. He is now a senior partner in a Washington, D.C. consulting firm and lives in Arlington, Virginia. "We are honored to have Norman Lent serve as our Honorary Coach against Wisconsin," Pride Head Wrestling Coach Tom Ryan said. "Mr. Lent's commitment to Long Island, New York State and this country is a true testament to the type of individuals who have graduated from our wrestling program and Hofstra University."
