NDIANAPOLIS - The U.S. has had significant success in Greco-Roman over the last quadrennial with a pair of third-place finishes in the unofficial team standings at the 2000 Olympics and at the 2001 World Championships. The U.S. finished fifth and 13th at the 2002 and 2003 World Championships, respectively. With several former Olympic and World medalists, and a plethora of young and rising stars, the battle for the seven U.S. Olympic roster spots at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling will be as fierce as ever. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling - will be at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis May 21-23, 2004. Today, www.trials2004.com continues its "Early U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling Preview," with a brief look at the contenders and favorites in Greco-Roman going into this Olympic year. The U.S. must qualify four of the seven weight classes for the Olympics in Novi Sad, SC (Serbia, Croatia) Feb. 28-29 and in the final qualifying tournament in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on March 13-14, 2004. Brandon Paulson is back as a favorite to win the 55 kg/121 lbs. spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. Paulson, who game out of nowhere to win a silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games, has represented the U.S. on three straight World Teams, and earned a silver medal at the 2001 World Championships. Lindsey Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) is Paulson's main challenger entering 2004 with a pair of back-to-back second-place finishes at the World Team Trials. Sam Hazewinkel (Pensacola, Fla./Gator WC) is a rising star at this weight finishing third at the 2003 Nationals. Duane Martin (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corp.) was on the 2002-2003 National Team and should be a factor again in 2004. Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) will be tough to beat at 60 kg/132 lbs. having represented the U.S. at the 2000 Olympics and the 2001, 2002 and 2003 World Championships. He was on his way to a possible upset over two-time Olympic champion Armen Nazarian of Bulgaria in the semifinals of the World Championships in France last October. During the match, he dislocated his shoulder and had to injury default. Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs/U.S. Army) is Gruenwald's nearest foe having won Nationals in 1999 and 2002. Two-time Olympian and 1996 Olympic silver medalist Dennis Hall (Plover, Wis./Sunkist Kids) cannot be overlooked. Joe Warren (Grand Rapids, Mich./New York AC) finished third at the 2003 Nationals and is also a contender at this weight. Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) has had a stronghold on the 66 kg/145.5 lbs. division since the last Olympics (he finished sixth in Sydney), and has been on the last three U.S. World Teams. James Shillow (Fredericksburg, Va./U.S. Marines Corps) was second to Bracken at last year's World Team Trials. Marcel Cooper (Woodbridge, Va./U.S. Marines Corps) is also a former U.S. World Team member, and won Nationals in 2001. Mike Ellsworth (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) was the runner-up to Bracken at the 2003 Nationals. Faruk Sahin (Colorado Springs, Colo.), a naturalized American citizen originally from Turkey, may also be contender. T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) put on a show to remember in Indianapolis at the 2003 World Team Trials at 74 kg. The two battled in three overtime matches with the third match going to Dantzler on criteria. This has been one of the wrestling's best rivalries since 2001. Sieracki won the 2001, 2002 and 2003 Nationals championships over Dantzler, while Dantzler won the 2002 World Team Trials to go with his victory in 2003. Ken Cook (Ames, Iowa/Cyclone WC) was the surprise runner-up to Sieracki at the 2003 Nationals. Darryl Christian (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) was fourth and third at the 2003 and 2002 Nationals, respectively. A pair of fifth-place finishes at back-to-back World Championships has made Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) the wrestler to beat at 84 kg/185 lbs. He won his first Nationals last April and captured his second World Team Trials championship in June. Ethan Bosch (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) also will be a factor having defeated Vering in winning the 2002 Nationals championship. Jake Clark (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marines Corps), who moved up from 74 kg. in 2003, was the 2003 World Team Trials runner-up. He was unable to compete against Vering because of injury, and is bound for a strong return in 2004. 2000 Olympic bronze medalist Garrett Lowney (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) has been a force at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. throughout the past quadrennial, winning the last three Nationals championships and the last three World Team Trials championships. Justin Ruiz (Taylorsville, Utah/New York AC) was Lowney's challenger in the 2002 and 2003 World Team Trials. Injury kept Lowney out of the 2003 World Championships, giving Ruiz additional experience. Phillip Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) is another rising star and finished second to Lowney at the 2003 Nationals. Frank Workman (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marines) is another top challenger. Rulon Gardner (Cascade, Colo./Sunkist Kids) versus Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) will be the match everyone will look forward to again in 2004. The Greco-Roman heavyweights have three of the last four Olympic or World gold medals between them (Gardner - 2000, 2001, Byers - 2002) and met for the first time since 2001 in Indianapolis at the 2003 World Team Trials. Gardner prevailed on criteria in overtime of the third match in a classic duel. The two will be favored to meet again in 2004. No one will overlook Corey Farkas (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) after he upset Gardner in the semifinals of the 2003 Nationals.
