The National Wrestling Coaches Association and local USA Wrestling associations in New England are excited to announce a free wrestling clinic to all wrestlers in New England with Olympic Gold Medalist Rulon Gardner. The clinic, which is being held at two locations on Sunday, November 30, was made possible through the generous sponsorship of ASICS, Cliff Keen and Kennedy Industries. Gardner will be conducting his first clinic from 9 am-12 pm at Rhode Island College in Providence, Rhode Island. The second clinic will then be held from 2-5 pm at Waterford High School in Waterford, Connecticut. Admission to the clinics is free. Wrestlers, coaches and parents are encouraged to attend this wonderful opportunity to work with one of America's most famous wrestlers. Following the clinic there will be an autograph session for all those in attendance. Gardner rose to fame following his historic gold medal victory in the 2000 Olympic Games over Alexander Karelin. Many consider his win over Karelin to be one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history. Following up his historic victory in the 2000 Olympic Games, Gardner captured the 2001 World Championships. In February 2002, Gardner was stranded overnight in freezing temperatures in the wilderness and suffered severe frostbite, and as a result of the accident, lost one toe to amputation. He made a comeback to wrestling, and earned a spot on the 2003 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team, placing 10th at the World Championships, qualifying his weight class for the 2004 Olympic Games for the United States. All proceeds from sponsorship dollars for this event support the National Wrestling Coaches Association coaching education initiatives. The National Wrestling Coaches Association is a 501C3 non-profit organization that was formed in 1928 to advance and preserve all levels of amateur wrestling, with the primary emphasis on scholastic and collegiate programs.
