Several Close Matches Highlight Navy Wrestling Blue-Gold Match

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Several close matches highlighted the annual Blue-Gold match Saturday night in Halsey Field House. In the opening match, junior Sam Gray (Essex, Vt.) held on for a close 5-2 victory against freshmen Brad Canterbury (Blue Bell, Pa.) in the 125-pound weight class, while sophomore Adam Brochetti (Kittanning, Pa.) scored a narrow 7-5 win against freshmen John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) in the 149-pound division. Junior Nate Gulosh (Stow, Ohio) posted a 6-2 win over senior Daniel Hemminger (Annapolis, Md.) in the 141-pound weight class. Moving up a weight class this season, junior Pat Lukanich (LaGrange, Ill.) came away with a 4-1 decision in the 157-pound division against senior Michael Carbonaro (Blairstown, N.J.). At 174 pounds, team captain Mike Barikian (Sr./Stratford, N.J.) was a 6-2 winner against Jon Kane (So./Portland, Maine). Navy 2003 All-America Frank Edwards (Sr./Olney, Md.) battled to an 8-1 win at 165 pounds against Adam Bones (Jr./Placentia, Calif.). Chris Pogue (So./Chesapeake, Va.) pinned Antonio Miranda (Fr./Eugene, Ore.) at the 1:02 mark in the 184-pound weight class, while Thayer Paxton (Jr./Meyersdale, Pa.) won the 197-pound division with a 14-5 decision against Andrew Adams (So./Dublin, Ohio). Rounding out the winners was Chris Miosi (So./Montclair, Va.), who cruised to an 18-5 win against Justin Langlois (So./Muskegon, Mich.) at 133 pounds. Navy will open the 2003-04 campaign Friday at 10 p.m. (EST) against UC Davis in Davis, Calif. The Mids will then travel to Palo Alto, Calif., Saturday where they will face off against Menlo College at 6 p.m. (EST) and Stanford at 10 p.m. (EST).
